I LOVE lifting weights. In fact, the heavier the better although I also enjoy higher rep/lower weight endurance workouts too. But I really love my weights.

I'm also really getting into body-weight workouts that use no equipment. I also think they challenge me more than a weighted workout.

So.......more body-weight, less heavy lifting? Mix in both? I have SO many great workouts and so little time!

I'm currently trying this type of rotation:
Mon: weighted strength
Tues: cardio
Wed: body-weight
Thurs: cardio
Fri: body-weight
(weekends are active with outside stuff)

I'm not really sure what I expect my results to be. Of course to lose some weight, but I guess my goals are to stay strong and flexible.
Just curious to know what everyone thinks.

Thanks!
I love this thread, Kate! I think it's important to do both as I age and like to include both during a rotation. I love yoga for the bodyweight aspect and think it works my total body just as much as weight work only in different ways.

I see you're still a Beast/Amazon with your workouts!! Insanity?? Don't think I would want to/could handle that one any longer at this point, LOL! Good for you and staying injury-free in the process. Keep at it, GF! I know you love your kick-butt workouts along with your yoga! Me too but just not AS kick-butt as yours, probably!

Great job on your results so far and keep us updated on your further progress!

ETA: I posted this on another thread re: bodyweight workouts, but thought I'd post it here too. Interesting article posted by Cathe:

Thurs: Bodyweight
Fri: Bodyweight

With Insanity I'm still getting some bodyweight moves even though I'm considering them cardio because they make my heart pop outta my chest.

Started doing a lot of Mark Lauren workouts and I love them! Slow and precise and I've felt every one. Not killer DOMS but I feel my whole body has been worked.
Also mixed in some David Jack workouts (Men's Health Spartacus).

I'm liking the change.
This week I lost 2 lbs but I've also gotten very strict with my eating. If you want to know what I'm doing, feel free to message me since we can't talk about diet. ;-)

I'll keep going through August for sure. Then we'll see what September (and exercise ADD) brings.

ETA: I also measured myself on Monday which I hadn't done in a long time. Stay tuned...

Congratulations, these are wonderful progressions, I look forward to reading more.

This is really interesting, because I've been all about trying to get to the point where I can do Jari Love and FIRM style high rep workouts with bigger weights. I'll never like doing straight strength training without some cardio effect, so that's been my goal. But I took a barre class on a whim at my local yoga studio, and good grief, that was challenging in totally different ways! I felt really worked out, and the instructor had a phenomenal body that was basically my goal. So I'm going to start doing more body weight, barre, Pilates, and similar types of workouts more often. I think it's fabulous to do a mix of all the modalities that you enjoy.

Hi Kate, that sounds like a really nice, healthy rotation, with room for a lot of variety in instructors and styles. I'm sure one could acquire - or maintain - a great fitness base.

I just previewed a few of Riptensity workouts. So... do you classify those as strength workouts? The instruction said to do one disk a day in any order so I am inclined to classify it as cardio...?

I would classify them as Bodyweight Strength/Cardio.

Since there's no suggestion on putting a day in between the workouts, I'm going with cardio. Even with pure cardio (i.e. step, hi-lo), there's always the added strength benefit. Basically there's no resting day for these workouts... if your body can take it. My weekly schedule might look like this:

M: Metabolic
T: Bodyweight
W: Upper Body
T: Bodyweight
F: Total Body/Kettlebell

AnMrsDe: Thank you dear..you are always so encouraging! Yes I still love Insanity. I may be a bit slower and don't jump quite as high, but I can keep up with those young whippersnappers!
Yoga makes it possible for me to do these kinds of workouts.
I'll never give up weight lifting, but doing more bodyweight is fun.

hdw: I don't take breaks during the week with my workouts but I do on the weekends. So I exercise M-F and weekends are still usually filled with activities and yoga.
And I think Riptensity is mostly strength but with a cardio feel because you do so much with your body. They are fun!

Still at it, still having fun. I am actually looking forward to measuring again at the end of the month to see what has changed.

Really interesting thread – I’m looking forward to hearing more about your progress as time goes on. I always enjoyed heavier weights, but began to incorporate more body weight about 18 months ago. It was not a planned change, just trying out different workouts for variety. I ended up loving the bodyweight workouts. I’m stronger than ever and have much better balance – as if I went from being the klutzy-est person ever, to now just semi-klutzy. They’ve also have had a streamlining effect; I haven’t lost any weight, but all my pants are loose and people keep asking if I’ve lost weight. My heaviest weights these days are 8 pounds during a Michelle Dozois Cardio Strength workout once or twice per week. Honestly, if anyone had told me I’d end up using a lot of bodyweight workouts instead of heavier weights, I would not have believed it.

Thank you all for the great comments!

I have a question...for this little experiment, when I do my weighted workouts, I have been generally doing lower weight/higher rep workouts - for the last 3-4 weeks at least. Like Body Pump, Muscle Endurance etc.

If slimming is my desired outcome, should I continue with that or do higher weight/Lower reps? Right now I'm only doing one weighted workout a week with cardio and bodyweight. I used to do 2-3.

I honestly am not sure what I am expecting. Slimming with some weight loss? I definitely want to keep my strength and it sounds like many of you do remain strong if not stronger.

Just kind of thinking out loud...plus I love reading all your ideas!
Thanks!
