Yoga Mat & Block recs

I just bought my daughter Ultimate Yogi from Mary. I know nothing abut mats and blocks. Which ones would you recommend for her to buy. I appreciate any recommendations. Peggy

After using some cheaper yoga mats from Target for a few years, I splurged and got a Mandala round yoga mat that I absolutely adore. It lets me face any direction and migrate on my mat sometimes i still use cheap foam blocks that I got from Walmart or Target.

Thank You so much. Do they come in a different size? I am not sure if that one will fit in her dorm room. Peggy

No, it's definitely not for a dorm room. I'd see what input others have.

Having lived in a dorm room a few years ago, I highly doubt any yoga mat would fit in there. If her school has a gym then I would recommend that she buys a towel and put it on top of the yoga mats they have there and just wash that every time. I used to take Tonique on my netbook and do those on the gym supplied mats.

As far as blocks go, IMHO, you can buy what ever one is the cheapest unless you really want to get a specific color or get a cork one over a foam one. I don't think the performance is any different though.

I'm late to the discussion, but thought I'd chime in anyhow.

Years ago, I got a yoga block as part of a set. (I've long since forgotten where it came from exactly.)

Just recently, I found a two pack of yoga blocks on clearance at Target for something less than $7, so I bought it. It's larger than the wimpy one.

These new ones are slightly larger than the old one, but the material seems identical.

I do like the slightly larger size, I think it will prove to be more useful and versatile.

I got my blocks at Five Below and they are fine.
I like the mats from Barefoot Yoga. They are reasonable and decent quality.

ETA: I just went to a workshop-vinyasa yoga with Natasha Rizopoulos. She recommends the Manduka PROLite for vinyasa yoga. Barefoot Yoga carries a Manduka mat but it is not the pro lite.

I have Barefoot Yoga's Ultra Mat which is thicker than normal because I like extra padding but they have a variety of mats including "Eco" Mats.

You have to scroll down to see their Ultra Mats.

I just bought this mat last month, and I am very pleased with it. It is half the price of the Manduka mats:

The company owner even emailed me through Amazon to ask how I liked the mat and if I had any concerns or questions.

Maybe someday I'll spring for a Manduka mat...
