mine is 1 piece, padded, with no screws in the middle. mine is 6# i think.
when this thing came out, they had several versions of it. the bench also came in different styles, but it was basically the same. my bench has a coil that can carry the plates on it and a holder for the barbell. the bench itself folds up and can be on an incline, decline, or flat position.
