Slow Twitch and Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers

Justina Ercole did a video explaining the difference. I found it interesting, especially since I always forget which is which.

https://youtu.be/0kvLro5zdG0

From what I gathered, fast twitch is heavy weight low rep, slow twitch is light weight high rep. She also said we need to incorporate both into our routine.

You can also vary the speed with which you do the exercises (ie leg lifts, kicks, etc).

There's really 2 types of endurance workouts. One is doing high reps with light weights, and the other is dedicated cardio such as running, cycling, swimming etc.

This article from Stronger by Science that I read last year has a similar conclusion, that we should do a variety of weight and rep ranges.

But they say that the evidence is not strong for the idea that certain rep ranges and relative heaviness of weight preferentially benefits one type of muscle fiber over another. Some studies point to that but some don’t.

I didn’t realize that, but makes sense.

I didn’t know there was a distinction, thanks for the info.

I kind of hope that is true. I prefer slow twitch, especially for strength. But it seems nowadays we are supposed to do heavier weights.
