Kettlebell swings = same cardio effect as the treadmill

Per this month's Women's Health magazine, 10 minutes of kettlebell swings has the same impact on cardiovascular fitness as 10 min of running on a treadmill.

We probably already knew this. Interestingly, although the kettlebell swings provided the same boost in heart & breathing rates, it didn't have quite the same calorie burn: 125 calories vs 171 calories (for a 160 lb person).

Still, that's impressive - if you do 40 min of kettlebell swings or similar kettlebell moves for strength training, you're burning 500 calories, too.

Thanks! They could have upped the metabolic demand by using heavier kettlebells; 8lbs for women/16lbs for men isn't very heavy, IMO.

That was kilograms, not pounds. 8kg is about 17 pounds and 16kg is about 35 pounds, usually recommended as starting weights for kettlebells for women and men.

Hmm, I use 25 lbs for my kettlebell swings...I wonder if that would offset the calorie difference?

I would think so. The heavier your kettlebell the higher your heart rate is.

That's great since I'm not much of a runner.

Oh, that's enough to make me want to buy a heavier bell, maybe a 30or 35lb one...but that has to wait until I get the Horizontal Conditioning club dvds...and then I was thinking of getting a weighted vest and then there's also...
