Dena, I'm sorry to hear about your situation but thankfully you were smart enough to ask good questions and run the numbers before quitting your current job. I've been 1099 for several years now and it sucks, quite frankly. Taxes and health insurance, as you have seen, are constant sources of anxiety.

You didn't mention your age, but if you are under 50 right now, your health insurance options will shrink once you do turn 50. I'm pretty healthy with one low-cost generic Rx and after turning 50, my Covered CA options went from about 12 plans (mostly unaffordable) to 5, three from Kaiser and the other two from a sketchy company I'd never heard of. I am currently on the cheapest option Kaiser offers and it's still nearly $500 per month. Thankfully the basic things like paps and mammograms are covered.

I hope you find a good solution soon!
