Donna, what kinds of problems did your mother and grandmother have? Did they experience chronic pain, fractures, or both?

A lot of what I've read so far is consistent with what Beth (ealakey) shared. There definitely seems to be a lot of variation from person to person, and so treatment is clearly not one size fits all. One example in my case is that my gynecologist encouraged calcium supplements, but then I met with my urologist, and she and I decided it would be best for me NOT to do calcium right now given my kidney stone history. (I'll discuss this further when I met with GYN in person next month.)

(snip)
My grandmother fell and broke her hip twice (or her hip fractured and then she fell?). I'm really not sure what other issues she had, but she did struggle for several years before she died. My mom has a hunch back, has lost height (about 3 inches), her hip became cracked at some point (without having any falls), and her back hurts all the time.

If I am blessed with the longevity that they both had/have, I am hoping that I will be able to prevent some of those issues with proper nutrition and exercise. However, if that doesn't work, I might consider some more 'unnatural' interventions. Just considering all my options.

Donna

Would you mind PMing me the name of this specialist -- I'm in the Denver area and would like to keep him/her in mind for future reference. Thanks!

What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

Dr. Paul Miller, considered to be an expert in the bone health world. He's now doing telehealth appointments which have been so helpful! https://millerbonecenter.com/

Good luck with the metabolic bone specialist, I've never heard of such a thing and it's good to know that option is out there. Doctors have been pushing those drugs on me too, and so far I've stuck to my guns. My gut instinct is not to go there.
yep, my gene test results came back yesterday. Positive for hypophosphatasia. That's probably where the low bone density came from and not necessarily osteopenia/osteoporosis. I'll find out more, but it looks like I'm probably not eligible for the enzyme replacement therapy. Good times! Let's hope I don't break anything.

that's too bad about not being eligible for the enzyme therapy. Good luck to you.
