I also agree the heart/lungs/muscles adapt quicker than joints, etc. And I have noticed a few times in the past couple years that when I really go for it with intensity I feel fantastic until some issue or injury creeps up. When I tried couch to 5K along with a couple high impact dance classes and lots of other activity, I learned that one of my shins does not like too much high impact (some is good and I enjoy a bit of impact, but 5 or more a week--the shin will rebel so I learned I need to keep it to 3 or 4 days and ideally alternate days) and when I combined heavy lifting with 100 push up challenge one wrist suddenly was sore and it is still recovering months later (better but high volume push-ups are still a no-no), it really didn't take long for the muscles to adapt to heavier weights, more reps, etc. I think one of the best arguments for limiting frequency of some types of workouts (or adding them in gradually) has a lot to do with giving smaller muscles, joints, etc a chance to adapt and recover. However what is too much for one is just right for another, so listen to your body.
