Relieving SI joint pain--any suggestions?

Hi gang,

Can anyone recommend some stretches/postures that might ease SI joint pain?

Thanks!

SI Pain

Exercises my chiropractor gave me for SI pain that help are:

1. a modified bridge lift. On back, knees bent feet flat on floor. lift to make body straight, hold a little and release.

2. Same position, lift legs keeping bent and twist down till you feel it and then come back to neutral. Do other side. After doing several go all the way into side twist to strech.

I also find yoga helps but some yoga moves can trigger the pain in me so I have to be carefull. I particularly find backbend series to be helpfull.
And sitting twists help, especially if a good crack happens (yea what can I say but for me it's like it pops out of place and if I can get it to go back in place I get instant relief).

Also PIlates and core strength helps. WHen it hurts if I suck in my core it feels better, more supported.

Anyway, if it keeps bothering you consider seeing a dr. I've done the chiropractor route and that worked for me. Physical Therapy is an option too.

Good

I'm so glad I could help some. Yes I Find if I do the exercises and streches right away it does help pretty fast. Take care. ;-)

A few of the suggestions already mentioned do in fact help mine. However my Dr. said be extremely careful with the yoga as some poses are bad for the SI joint such as the Lotus position.

Hope everything works out.

I am very carefull with yoga. I was doing Yoga actually when my first SI pain hit me so yea, there are several poses I don't do or I modify a lot. Lotus is one, pigeon I am carefull with too. But I love poses like Bow pose, that one just makes my back feel incredible, though I think it helps my upper back issues (desk job) more than my SI joing though it's never aggravated it.

:-)

Yoga is the main therapy I use for SI pain. There have been so many threads about this issue, so I'm just linking to the most recent thread:

I used to get into spasm frequently, now that's not the case. I've studied yoga therapeutics pretty extensively though.

SI - Sacro-illiac joint (not sure I'm right with spelling). It is where the sacrum and the illium connect.

When mine acts up it's where my butt meets my back on the left side of my spine (you have one on both sides) about midway between my spine and side of my body and deep in the middle of my body.

I highly recommend calling some friends and family members and getting a referral to a good chiropractor. I have to live with a certain amount of back pain everyday of my life, but when it flares up really bad, it's time to see my doctor.

Also, he'll take x-rays and perhaps even an MRI to make sure you don't have a disc problem that could be made worse by doing certain exercises.
