Unhappy Help! Does anyone else have Interstitial Cystitis?!!!

I've been having serious bladder problems since last year and I'm almost 99% sure I have Interstitial cystitis. I'm going to see a specialist in female urology on the 24th. To make a long story short, it feels like you have a bladder infection all the time but urine cultures don't show anything. It seems like everything can cause a potential flare up. Acidic foods, sex , laying down, and even exercising. It is a slow process to figure out what causes each person's flare ups. I'm not sure exercising is causing mine yet but it has been listed as a problem for some people. Does anyone else on this site have IC and is exercise a problem for you? I found a great support group message board for IC but I don't think many of them are concerned about exercise like I am. I've been exercising for years and hate to give it up. Plus the majority of fruits and vegetables are off-limits too! Ughhh!! Thanks for any input! Libby

Libby,

My heart goes out to you because of this painful problem!!!

I don't have IC, but thought I did a few years' back. I was constantly having the symptoms of a UTI/yeast infection, but all tests showed negative, and my condition didn't respond to treatments.

This went on for years. I was so uncomfortable, discouraged and depressed. Finally, a friend suggested that maybe I was allergic to my laundry detergent. That was it!!! I switched to All Free and Clear. I don't pretreat my underwear with anything (Shout, etc.) if there is any staining. I do not use deodorant feminine products (pads, tampons, douches, etc.), or perfumed soaps, bath oils, etc. Personally, I think all of those things should be banned from the market.

Give this a try. It may not be the answer for you, but it certainly couldn't hurt.

Also, do you drink cranberry juice on a regular basis? It really does serve as a propylatic (sp?) to prevent e-coli bacteria from sticking to the wall of the bladder. If you don't like the taste of cranberry juice, you could get cranberry capsules.

Please let me know (via private mail if you prefer) what happens with this doctor visit. I truly can empathize with the discomfort you are having.

Hi Libby , oh dear, I can so relate to how you are feeling. This condition really wears a person down. I have this. Exercise is not a problem for me, I find it helps me greatly. Actually I didn't know exercise was considered a problem generally but I do know of one exercise that can really upset bladders if done to excess and that is ab crunches.

I have had a visit with a uro/gynaecologist about this condition.
If you would like to talk more, I'm happy to chat privately.

I don't but...

Do you want to know that my cat did??

If you think it is hard being a person living with it try living with a cat who has it.

The last year of her life she was on cosiquin and it seemed to help some.

Anyway, I don't know anything that would help you - just thought this might give you a smile.

Talking That's Funny!

Oh, a cat with bladder problems is not a good thing! Our cat urinated on my husband's nice suede jacket. He has urinated on a lot of stuff. Not a pleasant thing to discover! Sorry your cat had so much trouble. Libby

Lightbulb OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!

I can't believe someone out there posted this. I have been a year to year victim of cystitis attacks the last horrid attack I got I ended up in the hospital on my b'day for two weeks with a 105 fever and the possiblity of going on a dialysis machine (sorry about the spelling). Every year I get bladder infections, why,
Why,Why I keep asking the doctors but I continue to get some lame answers that they can't seem to understand themselves. Other than this year to year attack I am perfectly healthy. But I noticed since I started exercising heavily and drinking water as if though Im a tank that I have to go to the bathroom frequently which is understandable... But then I have a constant sensation in my uretha to go back to the bathroom and it's minimal. So I get scared and go to the doctor with this issue since this happened before meaning me ignoring my bladder trouble. And the doctor finds absolutely nothing but very clear urine. So I explain to him what's happening he's baffled but assures me Im fine. The problem goes away but has come back and it's always after I exercise heavily. Im clean, I change what Gives? I just can't believe someone out there has been having the same experience and the doctors are clueless.
Thanks for bringing this up because now Im going to make an appointment with a uroligist first thing in the am., although Im symptom free at the moment it happens rather unexpectedly and is quite uncomfortable. Hope there is an answer for us.

To Tjaded:

Your problems sound a lot like mine. I've been having off an on pelvic pain since last summer. Most of the time, the doctors don't find anything in my urine and don't want to help you. So when you decide to go see a urologist, you need to ask ahead of time if he or she treat interstitial cystitis. Some of them don't and you will be wasting your time going to doctors that don't treat it. They will just load you up on gobs of medication and you will get nowhere fast.

Here is a description of IC: IC. is a fairly common bladder condition that affects hundreds of thousands of women, and a few thousand men as well. Why the predominance of women suffering from this disorder is not known. This is one of the more frequently misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed problems we see in urology. These patients often go for years before the proper diagnosis is made, thus resulting in a substantial degree of needless suffering. The hallmark symptoms are very similar to bladder infections….pain, frequent urination, urgent urination, urinating at night, but usually accompanied by pain in the pelvis, pain with sexual relations, and lack of response to antibiotics or the typical medications used for urinary frequency and urgency such as Detrol and Ditropan

Here is an excellent support group on-line: http://www.ic-network.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi

And a couple of good websites about IC: http://www.supportpath.com/sl_i/inte...l_cystitis.htm

Hope this helps you! Blessings to you! Libby

Hi All,

I was reading about some of the treatments for IC. I have actually had the bladder flush. It really wasn't bad.

A few years ago, I used a deodorant napkin. I developed a UTI that was so bad that I couldn't be more than a few feet from the bathroom. The urologist told me that I had an inflammation on my bladder that was bright red and the size of a quarter.

He catheterized me and filled me with silver nitrate, which can act as a disinfectant. I couldn't void for 2 hours. It really did the trick. It was so good to get relief (pardon the pun!).

Please do keep me posted. Having a long history of UTI's, any knowledge you share may help.

Good luck. I hope you find some relief soon.
