I have short, stick straight hair cut in layers. It has a mind of its own and I suffered through years of haircuts that made me look like Moe in the Three Stooges. My hair has to be cut in very tiny segments or I get that flat "slab" effect.
I've been cutting my own hair for almost 10 years now, and I get compliments on it often. I use a hand mirror and my bathroom mirror to assess and cut the back, and it did take some practice. Every year or so I'll go and get it professionally done to see if I can pick up any more tips, but often I wind up modifying it myself.
I've been cutting my husband's hair for longer and he refused to have anyone else cut it. It's a skill but I'll admit that layers can hide a lot or mistakes!
