I had to spend part of last winter up near Toronto. I'd see people jogging at 6:30 AM in 0 degree weather (-18c). I thought they were nuts.

I went jogging this morning. It was 54 degrees. I thought it was damn chilly. So I still think those Canadians were nuts.

And to me, 54 degrees is PERFECT weather. Sweatshirt weather is my favorite!

I actually wouldn't mind being outside while the weather is like this in the 60s and low 50s, but it's the darkness factor that sucks. I work during the day and now it's about that time where it's dark when I wake up and almost dark when I leave work. I may take my kettlebells out to the park on Sunday and see how that'll feel. I like breathing in crisp air like that, clears out the lungs. (well as well as they can be cleared breathing in air in the NYC area....)

I guess my question would become what do people do in the dark? I don't mind running in the cold but we have nowhere to run but the road here, once the snow flies sidewalks don't get plowed and I live in fear of being hit by a car. Does anyone have any advice for running when it's dark?

The cold doesn't bother me. It depends on my mood to go running. I've ran in the snow before on many occasions.

I run very early in the morning when it's pitch black in the winter - a headlamp is AMAZING. I have a crazy bright one. I also put additional blinking lights on my upper arm, and a reflector around one ankle - I think you can see me from 1/2 mile away. Cars start moving over WELL WELL before they are near me, so I know that headlamp is BRIGHT. It's a standard Petzl brand.

And they're nuts in other cities in Canada

Taken during a morning walk in Regina, at -20C. Most people are dressed the way Firmdancer describes above

I was going to suggest a headlamp and flashing lights too There are committed runners around here who run in the evenings. I see them coming from afar when I'm out on my bicycle.

For running in the dark, I also use a headlamp as well as reflective strips. But I am intrigued by these: knucklelights

Something else I've had my eye on are Illuminites (reflective running apparel). Brookes also has some reflective apparel.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't 87 degrees just a couple of days ago. It takes a bit for the ole' body to adjust to the cooler weather nowadays. In three months, that 54 degrees will seem positively balmy.
