Well, I live in the Bay Area now, so it doesn't get too hot or too cold. I can usually cycle in January in shorts.
But, I like to go to Tahoe and snowshoe and cross country ski (I leave the downhill skiing to the people who can do it - I tend to spend more time on the ground than on the skis). I wear a really light pair of wicking socks, then wool socks and if it's really cold, Gortex socks over those. I like light-weight shoes for snowshoeing, so it's not unusual for me to shoe is low top hikers or Gortex running shoes with gators over them. I will wear heavier running tights, or if it's really cold, fleece pants, and several layers up top - a silk turtle neck, wool or synthetic sweater or fleece, and a jacket. I get really warm when I'm moving like that, so I like to dress in layers to be able to regulate my temperature. I wear a hat or ear muffs, and I carry gloves, but I rarely wear them unless it's very cold. My hands get so hot. If my hands or my feet are too hot or too cold, I'm miserable. It's also desert there, even with the moisture, so the temperatures tend to vary wildly during the day. It's not unusual for it to be 10 degrees at 8AM and 40 by noon.
