Vannie - I am inspired by your DIY workout. Great creativity and planning. I had the same out-of-body experience reading about it that I used to get when I'd read pre-designed workouts in fitness magazines: like, I absolutely am saving these pages and I will do this workout the minute I get home. And then of course, I find the magazine pages inside a file folder in my workout room about 10 years later.

You guys! I need to talk about goals! And workouts!

Goals: Do you all have some good end of the year fitness goals to share? After a brutal month at work, I finally have the mental energy to focus on fitness again, so I'm trying to set goals for the remaining 10 and a half weeks of the year. And just in the nick of time, because we are now in a race to the finish! According to the internet, there are 72 days left in 2021.
I think having so many choices is making it harder for me to make goal-setting decisions. Outdoors, I can run or walk; indoors, I have all the varied workouts that Hydrow and Peloton have to offer. And even a treadmill. And I still have hundreds of neglected DVDs sitting on shelves. Can we call this #First-worldFitnessProblems?
  • So far, I have one no-brainer goal: get to 1 million meters on Hydrow so I can get my shirt. (Or is it a hat? I forget.) 1 need to average about 1,850 meters/day to do that. Fingers crossed my hamstring will cooperate.
  • I haven't decided on a bike goal yet. Or a strength goal. Or a running goal. And I've set up crime scene tape around the bathroom scale because I've been afraid to go near it during my time of my unfortunate work incarcertation. Yikes!

Favorite Workouts

Peloton bike - eek, they are all running together!
  • I've started dabbling in some different bike instructors including Christine (CDE), Sam, Olivia and Jenn Sherman.
  • I cussed out the very adorable Olivia. Jenn's ride was solid and she did not drop a single eff bomb, which apparently is atypical for Jenn.
  • I adore Sam and the CDE ride I did was 10 out of 10. I think my favorite ride in the last week was a Ben mood ride. The mood was 'happy' and I needed it. CDE's reflection ride also landed just right with me.
Peloton strength
  • Just about any 20 minute intermediate strength workout with Daniel, Ben or Selena is a good one for me.
  • I've bookmarked a 10 minute all-standing core strength with Rebecca that looks like fun.
Peloton stretch - Andy is my guy for warm-ups and pre- and post-run stretches. His pre-workout activations are the best.
Hydrow - Honestly, too many great Hydrow workouts lately to count.
  • They've been doing a lot of 2-person rows and the back-and-forth dialogue is great.
  • Aquil filmed some rows on the Potomac here in DC that are great, although I need to email him some DC restaurant suggestions to broaden his horizons.
  • Mike's "Our Common Thread" row is THE BEST.
  • Finally, just this morning I did the Head of the Charles Race (HOCR) row. Eight of the Hydrow athletes were on an 8-seater together with a coxswain and they rowed the HOCR course together in total, intense race mode. The coxswain kept up a steady patter of instructions and there was a surprise ending. The S/M rate started at 26 and stepped up two strokes every 4 minutes: 26, 28, 30, 32 and wide open to the finish line. Fantastic. There are 8 other workouts packaged with the 17-minute race workout and if you do 3 of them 9 workouts by Sunday night, there's a badge. The actual HOCR takes place this weekend and several of the Hydrow athletes are competing. Go Team!

That's all folks! I've been in and out of this post for a couple of hours while juggling work projects and I have no idea what the heck this formatting is going to look like when I finally post it. It'll be an adventure.

Daphne: I didn’t end up seeing any wild horses, but I did see a few on farms throughout the ride. I did see a flock of wild turkeys walking down the road. I had to chuckle at your “crime scene tape around the bathroom scale” comment. Me too. Me too. Even with all that bike training, I still am gaining weight. I’m careful about food too. It’s just this stage of life I guess. I love Sam’s rides. I can’t believe you found a Jen ride with no swearing. I wanted to like her rides, but the pointless swearing was too much for me. I’m not a fan of Olivia’s rides either. I like CDE but need to be in the right mood.

As for goals, they’re not so much goals but a plan. I have 4 weeks (starting 2 days ago) planned out with a mix of workouts each week (split between before work and lunchtime each day). There will be a few variations based on schedule, including a 3-day, 2-night hiking (but not camping) trip with my friends next month.

Monday: Arms, bike/row
Tuesday: Chest/back/shoulders, higher-impact cardio intervals
Wednesday: Arms, 3-mile run
Thursday: Chest/back/shoulders, bike/row/lower-impact cardio intervals
Friday: yoga, hike or neighborhood walk
Saturday: longer bike
Sunday: 4.5-mile run/walk
ETA: Also including core work on my lifting days and that I’ll change any of the outside run/walk/hike days to leg days if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Then, if that all goes well, I’ll start 18 weeks of training for the Shamrock Marathon. I plotted out Hal Higdon’s Novice 1 plan. It’s been more than 10 years since I’ve done a marathon, so I’m starting with the most basic plan. I have until December 31 to decide if I want to change to the half marathon, so we’ll see how the first 6 weeks go and decide. Today’s run was UGLY with a capital UGH. But that just means there’s nowhere to go but up.

I had thought about doing a Halloween 5k on the 30th but I've barely ran this fall and haven't even worked out that much so probably won't do it. I did workout today, though. Four more off the Halloween list. I liked two, one was okay and didn't like the other one. But I hit my gym and sweated it out and that's the important part!

Alison - Woot! Your goals are awesome. You are fierce! And I can't wait to see where your running is after 6 weeks of Higdon. His Novice plan is so good. I think all the cycling that you've been doing will help a lot with the running. Is this the Shamrock down in Va Beach? Also, I'm envious of your hiking expeditions. Are you staying in a hotel for the upcoming one? Regarding the bathroom scale, yes, it's ridiculous how hard it becomes to lose weight as we age. What used to take me 2 months to lose now takes me 2 years and I am not exaggerating. (I read some study a month or so ago that claimed that women's weight gain after menopause was a myth. It was supposedly a very reputable, peer-reviewed study but that just makes how WRONG it is even more disgraceful. Somebody was hitting the crack pipe that week.)

Vannie - You're knocking off all the Halloween workouts! I don't blame you for not wanting to run a race if you haven't done a lot of running.

Pratima - WAVES! Hope you're doing OK.

I'll have to come back later to talk about me.

Daphne: Yes, it’s the Shamrock in VA Beach. I was there this year for soccer the day of the unofficial in-person race (was virtual but many did it there), and it looked really fun, so I decided to try for the real thing. We are staying in a VRBO house in or near Roanoke next month. One of my friends figured that a 3-bedroom house was less expensive than 3 separate hotel rooms. It’s my third planned trip to hike McAfee Knob—they keep falling through. I hope this one doesn’t, but one friend dislocated her shoulder—again—and the other’s mom is having surgery, so either or both might have to back out.

I was supposed to run again Sunday, but we ended up hiking 6 miles instead. I’ll try running again tomorrow. Hopefully the 3 miles won’t feel as bad as last week.

I'm here! My month hasn't gone at all the way I planned. I so intended to check-in and just didn't.

My dad ended up in the hospital around 10/8 for the second time in three months. I wasn't going to go (my brother went last time) and then my brother guilted me into it. I spent a week there, basically running around taking care of my 91-year old grandma (she's in great health and all, just can't stay at home alone for days on end), visiting him in the hospital, running errands, and making a ton of calls to arrange private duty care.

He came home midweek and was very weak, confused, and stubborn about his state. I did get help, and two days after I left he was rude to and fired them. The whole week was super stressful and I've never been so happy to be home in my whole life!

I did enjoy the weather and got in some short workouts plus one run there. Came back 10/17 and did a 5K last weekend. Finished in 10:21 which surprised me and it wore me out!

Daphne, I like your idea of goals. I need to set some and have no idea what to do.

HOWEVER--I'm also supposed to have surgery for a small abdominal hernia. It's bothered me on and off for years and I finally saw a surgeon a while ago. Recovery is supposed to take a couple of weeks and then a gradual buildup back to fitness. I recovered pretty well from my lumpectomy and c-sections so I'm hoping this isn't too bad.

The next couple of weeks I'd like to do more strength work. It's suddenly dark and cool here in the mornings so tough to get going!

Alison, I have aspirations of heading your way (and Daphne's) for spring break! I feel like we should just plan it or we'll never go. I knew you could do that ride! Your outdoor activities lately have been inspirational!

Vantreesta, since I was gone DH didn't get a ton of decorating done. Yours look great! We did a small skeleton wedding scene out front. Since DH will be working during Halloween itself, he won't be putting out all the animatronic stuff. I'm feeling very meh about it this year.

I joined a gym a while back and it finally opened last month. I've gone exactly once! Tried a Total Fitness class. It was nice to get out and be around other people. Somehow tough to get myself there though. They have nice Schwinn Carbon Blue bikes in the spin room so I do want to try those and some iFit workouts on treadmills and ellipticals. I guess those are my goals for now!

I just signed up for Dark Horse Rowing's Rowvember challenge even though I know I won't be able to do it every day and never did finish last year's challenge.

Pratima - Eek! It would be great if you came this way for spring break! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

More Pratima - I am so sorry about your dad's health, confusion and anger issues. That's a LOT. You have a ton of mental strength and health to have managed to get through that visit and still rally enough to get in some workouts and even a decent 5K. If I could hug you, I would.

Pratima, Part III - Good timing to tackle that hernia surgery and get past it. Of course everyone is different, but I'll pass along that a friend's 93 year old mom just had abdominal hernia surgery and felt great after two days. They kept her in the hospital overnight and she was sore the first day home but after that, said she felt fine. (Very tough old lady.)

Alison
- Fingers are crossed that your hiking trip goes off as planned with all friends able to attend. Hiking is THE best. My June/July trip to Jackson Hole, with hiking in Grand Teton National Park and kayaking on the Snake River was truly medicine for my soul.

Vannie - This time you will show that Rowvember Challenge who's boss. Practice makes perfect. Can you choose your own goals or is it a set amount of meters you have to do?

Me - I've still got just one goal - to hit 1 million meters by year end. I'm on track but always worry about an injury or a trip interfering so I want to get a little ahead to give myself a little cushion. I want another goal, but I'll be honest -- every goal I come up with sounds kind of, um, hard. But easy goals are no fun either. My goal is turning into "having goals."

Favorite workouts -
-
Peloton
  • -20 minute full body strength/Andy Speer - This is only a favorite because it was so comical. By far the DUMBEST workout I have ever done. Andy was dressed up as Hercules (he looked damn good too) and speaking in a cartoonishly deep voice while he recited the "12 labors of Hercules." (Clean the king's stables, capture the golden hind, etc.) I actually was enjoying the corniness of it all but had do modify quite a few of the exercises. (Very kettlebell inspired and shoulder/trap/neck intensive, which I need to avoid.) I'm glad I did it but mostly because I was laughing so hard while doing it.
  • -10 minute Elton John cooldown ride/Bradley Rose - Norm came over and joined in the singing with me at the end. It was great. I was filled with anticipation for the EJ songs, and hoping they will release a few more. But I cannot make myself do a 45-minute Jenn Sherman EJ ride, un unh, no way, sorry not sorry.
Hydrow - This is always like choosing my favorite child. It just depends on my mood at the moment.
  • The one that hit just right was a 20 minute breathe on Lake Lucerne with Mac and Laine. Incredible scenery, the rhythms were easy (22-26 S/M) and I enjoyed their friendship and stories.
  • I've also been loving the DC rows. All my favorite running landmarks viewed from the Potomac with Aquil. Fantastic.
Bye for now!

I meant to post the other day about the Elton John cool down ride, but forgot to. I was going to tell everyone who has Peloton access that they have to do it. So Daphne, you read my mind. I don’t know how he does it, but Bradley made me feel like he was about to jump out of that little screen and give me a hug. I too wish someone else (Bradley) would do a full-length Elton John ride.

I’m still standing (see what I did there) with my workout plan. I still need to run today cause I couldn’t at lunchtime, but that shouldn’t be a problem after work. I ran 3 times last week due to some last-minute plan changes. The third was early morning along the Potomac River, which was so nice. I”be been rowing in 10-minute bursts, just to music. It’s good to get back in that habit. And I’ve been consistent on lifting.

I had other things to say, but I lost focus, so hi everyone and I hope all is well.
