Oh man. Big Bubbles just bought me some DVDs from Amazon for Mother's Day. I hope I don't run into the same issue.

KCM has been doing DVD-r. I will have to see if I can find this now.

I got a DVD-R from mary and she was very nice and said she would send me a regular DVD as she was going to open them all and send the DVD-Rs back.

I just looked up the difference between the two formats. I'm not sure why it is a problem to get a DVDr. It looks to me like the difference is that it plays on more devices and it can not be written over. Why is that a problem? Maybe older devices don't accept them? Am I missing something regarding this issue?

I found it - from KCM

*DVD disks play on all players and are less expensive, but can only be replicated in large quantities.

*DVDr disks: Might not play on old DVD players and are a tad more expensive, but replication order size is more realistic for older titles.

Heads Up: Some of my titles might be DVDr. Please ask the seller which disk it is If your DVD player is older and doesn't play DVDr disks.

I've heard on VF in past discussions regarding pressed vs. dvd-r that there are concerns about how long dvd-r's last vs. a pressed dvd, i.e. eventually dvd-r's may stop playing properly in a dvd player. Not sure if this happens frequently or not.

I tagged this thread with dvd-r so that you can pull up some prior threads which discuss pressed dvds (silver back) vs. dvd-r's (purple back).

Here's one explanation I found online for why dvd-r's "go bad" with more frequency than pressed dvds:

Quote:
Like the other guy stated, the commercial cd and dvd's are pressed like a vinyl record so it is physically pushed into the material to create the pits and vallies that the laser reads as 1's and 0's.
A cd-r or DVD-R is made using a laser to etch the spots into the material and the problem is oxygen gets to this material and eats away at it over time, oxydation, like rust destroys the data so the disc can no longer be read reliably. The name for this is disc rot, and it is documented, try googling it.

Personally, I would back up any dvd-r to your computer. (I back up pressed dvds as well, but definitely back up all dvd-r's that I've made from VHS).

I have had several older DVD-R's go bad so I'm pretty reluctant to buy them. Maybe newer ones don't go bad so easily. I just know I've got several older ones that no longer play and are unusable.
