In the Company of Dogs (not off topic)

I got a new In the Company of Dogs catalog yesterday and was surprised to see one of their new products is a stability ball for dogs. I love their products, but guess I'm not sure how that one would work out.

Is it this one?

Looks interesting. I wasn't aware that dogs needed to work on core stability. Of course, my Aussie would be too big for this. He's afraid of my stability ball anyway, so it probably wouldn't work for us. :) But then again, he's already incredibly agile, so maybe he doesn't need it.

Yep, that's it. My Osh definitely could use some stability help, but at his age, I think he would kill himself if he tried. I'm so afraid he's going to fall off the bed and sometimes he manages to get stuck between the mattress and headboard on the bed. Not sure, but we think he's about 15 and has slowed down a lot.

Interesting. Another type of agility training.

andtckrtoo: I have a black tri female aussie pup that looks alot like yours. We just got her from the So Cal Aussie Rescue last month. She tries to play with my stability ball but gets frustrated when she can't get her teeth into it. She is so funny.

I can not picture my baby on that! She's a big lab and I don't see her having any interest.

I can't get the video to work - does it show you how you are supposed to use it exactly?

Stability ball training for dogs? I think the looks on these dogs' faces says it all: http://www.inthecompanyofdogs.com/it...getype=product

I'm not sure how much stability and core training dogs (or other four-legged animals) need, but evidently someone thinks there's a market for it.

What's next: workout DVD"s for dogs?

Oh that's funny! I'm currently fostering a couple of dogs for NorCal Aussie rescue. Jimmy, my boy, is from a breeder, though (last time for me - from now on, rescue only - although he is pretty bullet proof because I was able to train him from such a young age). Have fun with your pup - I'd love to see photos!

For general canane fitness...this seems like it would not do much. And for dogs needing rehabilitation...not sure it would work either.

I have a 16 year old dog that has had vestibular disease. No way could she handle standing on an unstable surface. But the concept is similar to what was recommended to me to help her in her recovery.

With the dog standing....I was advised to gently rock her hips back and forth from side to side to stimulate her response to shifts in balance. Seemed to help. And she seemed to enjoy it too!

I love their products, though. (For anyone that uses pee pads, their pish pad rolls are great and have saved me SOOOO much money.) I bought a t-shirt from them that has a picture of a dog on the front in an e-collar and it says, "It's all fun and games until someone ends up in a cone". I get more compliments on that shirt and lots of people asking where they can buy one like it.
