need ice cream advice

you guys know everything, so here's my question.

i want pistachio ice cream, but i don't want to go out and buy an ice cream maker.

i was thinking of just getting vanilla ice cream, getting some unsalted shelled pistachios and somehow process them together, re-freeze and voila.

i don't want to use pistachio pudding mix.

it sounds like i might need to chop the nuts, heat/prepare them and maybe strain it a bit, maybe add some vanilla or almond extract.

i saw this and was thinking i could adapt it somehow:
https://books.google.com/books?id=ue...0cream&f=false

whenever i go to the store, i have to pay a high price for a tiny little quart of ice cream (ben and jerry's, safeway select, for example) or, they just don't have it because they run out!

any advice?

I'm no expert, but I think part of what you'd want to do is steep some of the roasted nuts in part of the ice cream base (or melted ice cream?), to give a more nutty flavor to the ice cream.

Definitely grind some of the nuts, but leave others in larger pieces.

I haven't made nutty ice creams very often because I find them so irresistible. Butter Almond is my favorite. (Ben and Jerry's Pistachio, Pistachio stays in the store because otherwise I eat it all.)

I have not used this recipe, but I found it online:

i see nothing immoral about this! i keep it in the freezer, wrap it in a plastic bag, and when i need a "hit," i use a teaspoon and eat 1 scoop. then i re-wrap it and stick it in the back of the freezer. you can apply this concept to pecan pie (except i put it in the frig).:yummy:

I only buy ice cream on sale but I try to avoid it because I come home and eat the whole pint in one go, especially if it's hot outside. It goes down so smooooth and creeeeeeamy and too easily! :o

I just ran across this Vegan Almond & Pistachio Ice Cream: http://vedgedout.com/2013/03/16/vega...hio-ice-cream/. You could sub pistachio butter for the almond butter to up the pistachio factor.

discovered some pistachio ice cream/gelato in stores:

newly discovered:
Safeway:
Pistachio Biscotti Gelato Indulgences

Safeway and Walmart:
Talenti Sicilian Pistacio Gelato

Safeway:
Baskin-Robbins Pistachio Almond Ice Cream - 1 pint: this is my all-time favorite, and Safeway just started carrying it! this has the right balance of pistachio flavor, and the almond somehow amps up the pistachio flavor.

These have been around for a long time, but thought i'd mention it:
Safeway:
Haagen-Dazs Pistachio Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio Ice Cream

Yum.

If you're in the do-it-yourself mood, I've heard you can make any ice cream base and freeze it in ziplock bags, then just crumble the frozen chunks into a food processor and grind it smooth, no actual ice cream maker required.

I'm thinking I'll try this at my birthday, I'm planning an ice cream cake. (I think, not sure our freezer could handle it.)

it should work. i've made banana "ice cream" by freezing peeled pre-cut chunks, and throwing them into the blender and voila! ice cream!

i have yet to try sherry's recipe and willwolf's vegan one too using your freezer and a blender or processor. i have a mini processor that works great.

we owned an ice cream maker a long time ago and i ended up giving it away to one of the relatives. same thing with a juicer.

instead, the food processor or blender works just fine for both types of needs (making ice cream and juicing). of course a juicer allows you to throw in the peel too, but i found the juicer just took too long to clean, etc. i also discovered we rarely used the juicer.

i found another brand of Pistachio ice cream - at Safeway. it's their "house brand" called "Signature Select" Pistachio ice cream with almonds. and it's a "regular size" container, 1.5 qt.

it's pretty good too!
