Barefoot & On the Mat October 2022: Let Fall Begin!

Hi! Welcome to the Barefoot & On the Mat check-in thread for October!

This is a long running check-in here at VF. We are a small, cozy, and welcoming group who perform a wide variety of workouts, but we have a special love for those that are performed barefoot. If you are a fan of such workouts (Barre, Pilates, Yoga, Fusion, Classical Stretch/Essentrics, Ellen Barret, Kettlebells, etc.), or even traditional workouts performed barefoot, you are welcome. And even if you wear shoes for workouts, come on in -- we won't tell!;)

Our welcome mats are always rolled out, and we love hearing from new, returning, and guest Mat Mavens!

Back in a moment....

I can't speak for everyone, but October is one of my favorite months! Where I live the summer weather can seem endless, so it is a treat to see and feel the temperatures finally dip downward. Also, maybe due to leftover back-to-school mentality :p the beginning of fall feels like a fresh start. This year it certainly is for myself, as it will be my first full month of retirement!

No workout for me today (I'm attending a memorial service in support of a friend), but this morning my long walk will take me to the library to pick up my holds -- my first visit there since I retired. Should be fun, but I'm sure I'll feel a bit wistful as well.

Waving to all!

Yin Yoga with Donna Helm-Yost (first 50 minutes)

I've been doing some batch cooking and laundry. I also want to wash all of our bedding.

Sandra, thank you for starting our October month!
You'll get to try your new gym soon and I bet you'll love it.
That's sweet of you to consider volunteering at a food bank.

Beth, I'd love a fun book!

Thanks Sandra for starting us! Every month I can't believe how quickly it has gone by.

Paine, the reading thread is always a good source of ideas for me!

Taught a nice hatha class at the studio this morning, and tomorrow I am teaching goat yoga! :D

Yay, it's officially Pumpkin Spice Month! :yummy: Yesterday featured:

~ Ellen's Cardio Core
~ Home Improvement bis and tris
~ Yoga with Bird Restorative Yoga for General Back Pain Relief
~ 4,505 steps

The Bird yoga was very nourishing, I saved it to my back yoga list.

Thank you for starting our October discussion, Sandra!

So what's everyone up to this weekend? We are going to see Moonage Daydream and actually eat in a restaurant for a change. I can't wait to see this movie!

Paine 10-01-22 01:39 PM

Beth, most of the books I read are books I found out from the Fall Reading thread.

Pat, let us know what you think about Moonage Daydream. I saw David Bowie in concert in the 70's. I'm so glad I was able to see him back then!

Good morning mat mavens! I hope all is well with everyone!

We arrived home late Wednesday evening after a looong travel day. I’ve mostly reset my clock, although I’ve temporarily become an early bird. :D I got back at my workouts on Thursday, keeping it low key to start. DH calculated we did about 400,000 steps during our travels, but I didn’t get many strength workouts in.

Thursday:
~ETV: Lauren’s live Sept 12
~Barlates: 15 min Arms
~Long stretch & supported yin poses with my beloved bolsters

Friday:
~BellyFit: Freedom to Bloom
~Jessica’s WS Boost Metabolism: lower body focus
~Long stretch & yin

Saturday:
~ETV: Alexa’s live Sept 14
~Barlates: Beginner Cardio Sculpt - Linda can pack a lot into 20 min :p
~Long stretch & yin

Sandra - Thanks for starting us off! Is your new gym opening soon?

Pat - Enjoy the movie!

Waves to all!

Good morning! Yesterday featured:

~ Lee Holden Qigong for Anxiety
~ Kassandra's 30 Minute Reclined Yin
~ Nighttime walk around neighborhood
~ 7,249 steps

I give Moonage Daydream 4 popcorn boxes. For the most part it was wonderful, but it would have been perfect if about 30 minutes of philosophical musings and repeats were edited out. There were so many wonderful scenes though, woven together with eye popping graphics. It was fun to see David's transformations throughout his lifetime and of course, the music. There was a segment on his paintings and they are worth a google. I found some of the Berlin era paintings rather disturbing. He used people affected by the Iron Curtain era as models and the images are abstractedly haunting. He truly did live an incredible life and manifested what most of us only dream about.

Paine, I'm jealous you attended a Bowie concert during his orange-haired personas era. I wonder if some of those amazing platform shoes and costumes have been preserved in museums?

So nice to see you Pam! Welcome home from your amazing European trip.

Sandra - sending hugs - please accept my condolences on the loss of your friend.

Waves to all, I hope the rest of your weekend is enjoyable.

Paine 10-02-22 01:28 PM

Today is a rest day.

Welcome back Pam! I missed you.

Pat, when I saw Bowie in concert (around 1976), he had tamed down and was blonde and in a black suit.
Last night my DH and I saw on Netflix: Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a very good concert and brought back memories! We are such old farts! :p

Todays workouts:
~ETV: Ellyn’s live from Aug 15
~Barlates: Fusion Flow Dynamic - This was a dynamic stretch workout with balance work & big full range movements. It felt really good!

Aw that’s sweet of you to say Paine! :) I’ve missed checking in with everyone.

Pat - The movie sounds good! I’ll have to mention it to DH as he’s a big Bowie fan.

Waves to all!
