Binge-watching? (Aug 2021 Edition)

Speaking of retro, we have been doing a 1960's movie and TV fest.

We started with Cold War/espionage films like Fail Safe, Dr. Strangelove, Our Man Flint, In Like Flint and Casino Royale. We included the Austin Powers trilogy (even though they aren't 60's films).

We just finished up the three seasons of Steve Canyon (1958-1959) - starring Dean Fredericks as an Air Force Lt. Colonel solving mysteries. DH liked all the stock footage of 1960's aircraft. The set included all the old commercials, including ads for cigarettes.

Last night, we started Route 66 (1960-1964) starring George Maharis and Marty Milner.

I get a huge kick out of naming all the many guest stars. Some of whom were unknowns getting their first breaks.

I just finished bingeing Grimm on Prime. I started it when it originally aired on network tv, but got behind after two seasons and never restarted. Nice to finally know how it ended, lol.

Now I'm watching Eureka, also on Prime.

Currently making my way through Person of Interest, but took a break to watch some Star Trek: Lower Decks.

I think Lower Decks is great, but the pacing is a bit too fast for me. Wish they'd slow down the dialogue a bit.

I recently discovered My Wife & Kids on Hulu, which ran from 2001 - 2005. It is hilarious!!

sherry7899 08-12-21 04:15 PM

I am embarrassed to admit I am binge watching Long Island Medium. Please don't judge me!

I absolutely loved both those shows.

I am watching The Food That Built America with a chef friend of mine.

Gams 08-12-21 04:33 PM

My sister just introduced me to New Tricks.

anetta 08-12-21 05:11 PM

I am still watching the Office on Comedy Central.

I just finished Schitt's Creek. I enjoyed it a lot.

kat999 08-12-21 05:48 PM

My husband and I have been bingeing The Americans on Prime (originally ran on FX from like '13 to '18). It's set in the early '80s and is about Soviet spies who infiltrate the US and pose as a suburban married couple. Really riveting, especially for folks who remember the early '80s very well and enjoy seeing callbacks to the fashion and pop culture.

We're almost done with the latest season of The Handmaid's Tale; we just started Virgin River, Season 3; I decided to re-watch Downton Abbey  and we're into the second season; and we continue watching City Homicide, an old Australian crime drama.

Person of Interest is an all-time, top 5 favorite TV show of mine. I rewatch it about once a year.

I am currently binging The Ultimate Fighter series. I'm almost done with Season 1. I forgot about a lot of those guys that were around back then. I'm trying to reignite my MMA obsession. It was one of the things I really loved, but I lost it for a while. I think rewatching this show and some old UFC fights will get me back there ;) I found the UFC channel on Roku and the Fight Pass is only $10 a month and you can watch pretty much every season of TUF and any previous fight that you can imagine!

rhbrand 08-12-21 06:53 PM

(Hides face in shame) I'm watching The Real Housewives of New Jersey. I'm on season 5.
Yes, I've watched 4 seasons since late July when I started watching it again.

I'll move onto the other housewives when I'm done.
I just want mindless stupid tv I don't have to pay much attention to and that keeps my mind off (waves hands around) all this crap

I watched Season 3 of Virgin River. I am curious about your thoughts when you are done.

I loved The Americans and Virgin River. I'm now finishing the final season of Schitt's Creek. Hated it at first, waited months, went back to it, now love it and will miss it terribly!

Lol Sherry, I’d never judge! When I can’t sleep sometimes I watch snippets of Say Yes to the Dress on YouTube. :o

Right now I’m binging British crime shows on BritBox…..Silent Witness & DCI Banks.

I hated the beginning of the first episode and quit watching it before I finished it. Then my daughter convinced me to try it again, and we watched it together. I really missed it when I finished!

I love The Americans! I am watching it through for the second time now.

We are watching Virgin River. Somehow we keep watching but it isn't that well done.

Joni O 08-12-21 09:06 PM

I think of Virgin River as a never-ending Hallmark movie. :D

That is a very good description. I actually very much dislike Hallmark movies, so I don't know why I like this show!

Thanks, Pam! I signed up for a year of Britbox when they had a special for $39 for a year, but I have not watched anything on it yet!

I should pick a show and get started on it.

Carol K 08-13-21 05:42 AM

I am simultaneously watching the third season of the Belgian version of Professor T with the first season of the UK version of Professor T. I'm about to finish Halifax Retribution and then I will start season 2 of Before We Die (Swedish). And I'm finishing season 4 of Unforgotten.

Yes! That is a great way to put it!

I'm on my umpteenth round of Schitt's Creek. It's what I watch before bed to help me fall asleep, always good to have a few laughs before you fall asleep. Doesn't matter how many times I've seen it, still makes me laugh out loud.

I'm also watching Orange is the New Black, I recently started season 3. Never watched this one before but I'm enjoying it so far.

Both on Netflix.

Thanks! I missed it when it was originally on, and I found out Discovery Plus has the whole series and a new season made for the channel.

I loved that show, definitely binge worthy!

Rivercat 08-13-21 10:24 AM

I am putting off the final episode of Schitt's Creek so it won't be over :D

I'm slowly working my way through Downton Abbey again, having stopped watching sometime during the 4th season originally.

My new obsession is Jane the Virgin on Netflix. It's very funny and sweet.

That’s what I’ve been watching it on too. I don’t have cable so never got to watch it before. I’m on Season 7 plus I watched all of the newest season.

I am a little behind you on season six.

BunnyHop 08-13-21 01:57 PM

My sister gave me a Netflix gift card for my birthday and I'm wondering how to clone myself so I can have enough time to watch all the stuff that's caught my eye. :)

I've seen Orange is the New Black, and really like it, but these days I'm less about intense drama than I used to be.

Looking for some lighter fare, does anyone have some suggestions?

Watched the very first episode of Star Trek for the first time in a long time. (Christopher Pike!) and that was fun, but I think I'll be making that a sporadic treat, not a steady diet. (The sixties production values are so much more noticeable than I'd realized. :) )

Grace and Frankie.
The Kominsky Method.

There's some excellent drama but for lighter these are my favorite.

Thanks for the rec, I'd seen a bit of Grace and Frankie but never followed through once there were new seasons. Guess I've got a good bit to watch now, LOL!

If you like halifax you may like Wanted. The same actress is in that one too

Cher 08-14-21 05:59 AM

I finally just started Virgin River last night. :sun:

Joni O 08-14-21 06:22 AM

Season 7 of Grace and Frankie is now up on Netflix! Sweet Magnolias is another Hallmark movie-type series. Only one season so far, though.

My absolute favorite was Nurse Jackie!

If it's on PBS Passport, I'll probably see it eventually.
