Looking for a pull-up bar.
Any suggestions? Anything I should be aware of before buying? Is cheap okay?

My boys use the cheapo pull up bars they found at Walmart. No problems.

I have a cheap one
from WalMart or KMart. Works fine! Now working up to pullups is another matter entirely. It's SO HARD!

I just bought one by Altus for $20 at SportChalet. It has brackets. I used to have a pull up bar thirty years ago, when I was ten, and I mostly used it just to swing into the living room! My mom was way ahead of the curve. Divorced mom of two with a pull up bar, a slant board, and an ab wheel in 1970! She's 72 now and goes swing dancing two times a week with her 81-year-old boyfriend!
