I'll second that suggestion. I still have the shorter bar I got at a sporting goods store over 20 years ago. At one point, I did buy a "real" Olympic bar. But I find I prefer, and still use, the shorter bar.
Depending on how the store sells it, buy all the plates that come with it. Plates designed for Olympic bars may not fit on the shorter bar, so you don't want to get stuck later down the line with not being able to add plates.
