If you really want to learn the basics of meditation without any extraneous bells or whistles, I can't recommend this book highly enough:

I tried with DVDs, with CDs, with multiple other books, and they all just made meditation seem really complicated. The Wooden Bowl made it clear how simple meditation is, and was the only thing that ever got me practicing semi-regularly.

The Insight Timer app for iphone or android is free and has a nice selection of guided meditations that vary in length, starting at one minute. Or you can just use the timer to meditate on your own.

Anyone have recommendations like headspace? Simpler and more about breath and self awareness than guided? I'm good if they aren't free but don't want a subscription.

Not-Free recs....

I like many of Jon Kabat-Zinn's meditations. They are mostly body scan types.

I also like his books Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are:

ETA: I also like Bodhipaksa (who has a Scottish accent). His breathing meditations are nice:

There's a 30 Day Meditation Challenge on DoYouYoga.com. I think Faith Hunter has a really wonderful variety of 'styles' of meditation. IMHO, she is a super instructor. And it's free.
