Another article on overtraining

http://www.precisionnutrition.com/are-you-overtraining

This topic seems to come up frequently here, so I thought it would be interesting. Can less be more?

The most interesting part of this article is the graphic on how much time should be spent on each type of activity: strength, intervals, steady state cardio, fun activities.

ETA: I left out most interesting "to me" in above comment.

Thanks for posting the link! I found the article very interesting. But I am tired; therefore no mental energy to form a comment other than: thank you!

I love this quote:

"Strenuous exercise releases chemicals that kill pain and make us happy… temporarily.

By the way, these chemicals are also released when your body thinks you’re in big trouble and about to die. Their evolutionary job is to help us float away in a happy painless haze as the saber-toothed tiger is eating our arm off. So in a sense, they’re stress-related chemicals."

Awesome link, thanks for posting Chomper, it was a great read.

I loved this:

Quote:
The right amount of exercise, at the right intensity, and the right time:

We train. We learn. We get healthier and stronger.

Too much exercise, with too high an intensity, too often:

We strain. We stress. We shut down. And break down.
The only thing I'm not sure I got right was the chart... I guess it is the total hours a week, but then the last at 10 to 15 seems like a bit too much?

Nice article, thanks for sharing. I like that "fun" is included. Sometimes we are so focused on goals that we forget about the fun.

I received a Fitbit Charge HR for Xmas and my favorite thing about it is that I can use it to monitor my resting heartrate. A common sign of overtraining is an elevated resting heartrate, so when I start noticing my RHR creeping upward I know it's time to back off on the intensity.

Good for you, that is a good observation. Yep, stress increases heart rate and blood pressure.
