"not good enough"

Something which I think ties in with this thread on the extreme workouts, is continually getting beaten up by the "experts" that whatever you're doing right now for fitness isn't good enough or isn't the right thing. Although it's good to have government guidelines for fitness, I believe our thinking (in general) needs to be simplified drastically when it comes to fitness. Other countries are fitter and thinner with less trouble, expense, and complication that the U.S.

There are too many ppl who lose weight with a trainer on an all-out program and then gain it all back and then some when severe job stress comes along like possible layoff. Trainers don't teach ppl anything moderate they can consistently stick with in real life for a lifetime. Because if they did that, ppl wouldn't need the trainers so much any more.

Scorpio - those are good points, I think the key is we're just so sedentary and if we just exercised moderately and just moved more throughout the day we would be more fit and healthy. I know it is hard, though, I have a desk job and a commute and it is very hard to fit in extra movement throughout the day - but I do think that would be key to a lot of our weight and health problems. And, I also agree that you need a program you could do for life and not get burned out on or injured from b/c that will derail any efforts at maintenance.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer (in fact, he was MY trainer) and he DOES try to teach people to be moderate so they could stick with it for life. He is all about the nutrition, exercise, holistic "this is a lifestyle change, do it to enjoy it" approach. His problem nowadays is that clients don't want to hear it. They want to lose weight quick, don't want to change the diet, and are in general not "in it to enjoy it". If they don't see results, it's convenient to blame the trainer since they are paying him.

Ha! Funny you should mention this. I've seen it first hand with instructors in my gym. Most are in their early to middle fifties now and they are definitely changing up their workouts and classes. Some have even gotten certified in yoga and pilates which I never thought would happen.

Oh good grief, what a losing battle! Poor guy. We certainly seem to be so quick-fix oriented these days...
