We have HBO On Demand, so I watched the "Children in Crisis" episode last night. The first 10 minutes of hand-wringing can be skipped, but the rest of the show had some interesting bits.
Of the most interest to me, is how much the food industry controls things like TV commercials and school lunches. They also interviewed several kids around the country who were going through various weight-treatment programs. But while some kids talked about being bullied and called "fat and ugly", there was no discussion about stopping weight bullying or boosting kids' self-worth any way other than weight loss. One girl said she loved to dance and perform, and was shown in a dance class, but she feared that her weight would eventually stop her from dancing. Seems to me that kind of mindset - that certain activities are "closed" to the non-thin - is something that needs to be addressed along with healthy eating and exercising (which is important to ALL kids, not just the obese ones). Overall, a few good points, but still a lot of blaming-the-victim.
