Nothing wrong with pepper spray or dog spray. You never know. It's better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

You might try Knuckle Lights available at running stores and Dick's Sporting Goods. They really light up my path when running in the early morning.

Wow you all are so helpful- thank you. My husband thinks I'm a freak because I don't like walking in pitch black, but better to be on the safe side. You just never know. How often do you all vary your path? Or do you walk the same every day

But if you honestly feel that you need to carry it, please know how to use it and the laws in your state surrounding its use. As an alternative, I would suggest finding a different route if the one you are planning seems sketchy.

To answer your follow on question, I run the same routes depending on my planned distance (my 5 mile route is always the same, but my 7 mile route is somewhat different - but always the same if I'm doing 7 miles...). Knowing all the little bumps in the sidewalk is helpful, especially in the dark!
