The humidity in the summer really gets to me now as I get older. In late July and August if there's anything to be done outside I do it in the early morning.
Oh, wow, I'm actually in Dayton itself! Small world! As I get older, I find it's the winter I tolerate less and less, although those very hot days can indeed be kind of a lot. I have also been known to try to schedule outdoor things in the early morning.

I live in extreme southern Illinois, about 1.5 hours southeast of St. Louis.

Likes: Well, it can be quite rural, but I live near the largest town in the area (Carbondale, a university town), and I enjoy the cultural advantages, diverse population, shopping and entertainment options (including wineries and breweries) that most people in rural areas don't have. I also like the relatively mild winters (this winter is an exception with all the snow and extremely cold temps we've had lately, though) and gorgeous autumns. Property is inexpensive compared to urban/suburban Illinois. And if you like the outdoors, there is a variety of options for you here, with many parks, lakes, rivers, trails, scenic views, orchards, etc.

Dislikes: The largest major city near me is St. Louis. We are far from a major airport or a Trader Joe's (both are about 2 hours drive); if you need certain medical specialists or hospital care outside of our local expertise, you might need to go to St. Louis; property taxes are high; spring weather can be dangerously stormy and summers can be quite hot and humid most of the time.

I'm single and retired and I would probably move somewhere else (closer to a larger metro area) if it weren't for my elderly parents and my siblings all living nearby. I relied heavily on my siblings while I was recovering from my broken ankle. If I had lived farther away from them, I don't know how I would have managed. So--I guess I will be staying here for a while!

I live in Raleigh, NC. I don't love it but I don't hate it. A lot of people like the fact that we get all the seasons, but I do NOT like the fact that we can get them all in the same week. The temperatures here - especially Feb. through April - can swing 40 or more degrees in 1 day. And even though the winters here are relatively mild, I would rather live somewhere where there is no chance of snow.

I lived in Houston for 4 years, and while I wasn't a fan of the city itself, the weather was perfect for me. The summers are hot and humid, which is fine with me and it's the same here in NC. But the winters were basically fall. I am much happier in 90 degree weather than anything below 70. I get energy from hot weather. I understand that's not normal

A lot of people that live specifically in Raleigh also really like being within a few hours of both the beach and the mountains, but neither of those things interest me much, either. There is plenty to do here, but it's not quite where I feel I belong, even though I've lived here a majority of my life. I'm not sure where I should end up, but it should definitely be somewhere warm!

Mary, Have you been to the Sandwich Fair? I went in 2019 and had so much fun. My parents are in McHenry and my sister is in Fox Lake. One of my sister's sons works in advertising downtown and lives in Marina Towers. I grew up in a western suburb (Maywood). In the fall I hope to go to the Sandwich Fair again, either that or the "DeKalb County Barn Tour" in August that my mom really wants to go to.

Sorry . . . I haven't figured out replying to a specific message yet. For those who asked I lived in Hawaii for 5 years in the 1990s - one year in Honolulu and four years in Hilo on the Big Island.

I'm from Portland, Oregon and I still live in the metro area.
It's absolutely gorgeous. If you like the outdoors this is your place. I can be at the coast in about 90mins, 30ish mins to the mountain, and about an hour to the desert. (Many people don't realize that a large part of Oregon is desert.) Here in the valley it rains a lot. We just had a crazy snow storm, over a foot in just 24 hours at my place! That's rare. Usually it's fairly mild year round. Summer is amazing here. You can be active outdoors the entire year comfortably.
It sure has changed a lot in the past 15 - 20 years. Portland used to have a "big small town" feel with a hippy vibe and that's gone. Think hipsters, traffic, and lots of new condos. It's so expensive and everything is crowded now. I'd like to move someday because the area sort of got ruined, sadly.

lol!

i had the privilege of returning to Dayton for a visit in 2015. it was the first time going back since i was 4 years old. we were in Indiana for my son's performance at Butler Univ and we drove down to Dayton to meet my godmother, who gave me a tour of the place since it was totally foreign to me other than the family pictures we kept over the years.
