My Sony player changes speed and is upscaling. It's several years old, but the same model (SR510H) is still for sale at WalMart for around $35-40. Be forewarned that Amazon reviews and my experience is that the remote tends to crap out.

Aside for those of us who need subtitles: anything but normal speed results in no subtitles.

I wish I could slow down:

Cathe's Body Max (Step & Power Circuits, they move WAAAAAYYYYY too fast)
The deadlift "warm-ups" in Tracy Effinger's Squeeze Stronger and Lower Body Challenge
Michelle Dozois Peak 10 Cardio Strength
Karen Voight's Power Packed Workout (until the choreography is learned)

I just found another way to slow down a workout.

Google Chrome has an add-in extension called "video speed controller" that allows you adjust the speed of videos viewed using the chrome browser, including YouTube. This one lets you go at 10% increments, so a .90 speed is an available option. I tried viewing a YouTube workout video at .90 speed and it worked great.

Woo-hoo! The possibilities.....

Does this work on a tablet or iPad YouTube app?

I had no idea that a dvd player could slow down playback. How cool!

One of my players can do this, so I swapped in where I usually work out.

Now to figure out which workout to do!

It's a little nerdy, but you can do it!

On your Mac, you open up the Utilities folder, and choose Terminal. That will give you a new window that looks like a black & white computer screen from 1990.

After the cursor, paste this in
osascript -e 'tell application "QuickTime Player" to set rate of document 1 to 0.9'

That will give you 90% playback speed. Change the final number to your taste, press enter. You won't see anything different but now when you open Quicktime, it's magically slower!
