The Real Cost of a Marvel Body

I don't know how many men are on this forum but I thought some women could relate to this article as well.

It really is striking how male movie star aesthetics have changed. when you compare a leading man from a 70s movie to today...

thankyou for this! I always end up wanting to build like the female super heros, or atleast be as cool as Agent Mae on Agents of Shiled. I tend to compare and I know its not healthy. The way she can move in her 50's just makes me sick since my joints cry like a baby at 41, lol. I know thats not what the article is about, but it puts things more in perspective for me. Thankyou. (I know this stuff, just have to read it sometimes)

Good article, but I don't think this phenomenon started with the popularity of the new Marvel movies. I remember in high school, there were lots of guys who used to look through those bodybuilding magazines dreaming of being that big. Over the years I knew lots of men who didn't dream of being gigantic, but still always felt insecure about not being "well-built".

I also have noticed since my brother was in high school that the male actors he admired I actually thought looked strange to me. They had unbalanced bodies with arms and chests out of proportion to the rest of the body, and I actually had some concern that this type of imagery is affecting men and their body image negatively. I tried to convince my brother of the problem, but he thought I was crazy. Don't get me wrong - if I found a naked Daniel Craig from Casino Royale in my bed I wouldn't complain...I would just have to talk to him about he feels about his body.

From that article, this really stood out and made me sad:

With the extreme risks and financial burden associated with looking like Steve Rogers, it’s worth asking: Is this emphasis on getting big at all costs making us any happier? In 2015, a BBC report noted that “bigorexia” (more accurately known as “muscle dysphoria”) is on the rise in young men. Rob Willson, who serves as the president of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation, told the BBC: “We know about 10 percent of men in the gym may have muscle dysmorphia.” Dr. Michele Kerulis of Adler School of Professional Psychology told The Daily Mail that rate may be even higher: She claimed as many as 45 percent of frequent male gym goers male suffer from disordered body image.

Funny you should mention Daniel Craig. I thoroughly enjoyed him playing Guy Crouchback in the BBC adaptation of Sword of Honour. Not a bit of cartoonish male bravado but a portrait of a man struggling to find his moral way in a rapidly disintegrating world. Most of the men had a lean and hungry look that is more attractive than the superhero physique.

I've given up trying to look like that. Too much food that turns to fat. Body beast gave me tendonitis. I'm really enjoying 30 minutes workouts that allow me to recover and not eat like a horse.

This show sounds interesting, but will have to wait until my library gets it on DVD to watch. I think a man can look good with whatever physique he may have. But I don't think a man has to be anorexic levels of body fat either. There is more to a man's physical attractiveness than just "big guns" or extreme-low-body-fat-ripped-abs.

Glad you figured out what works for you.
