A little humor.
Cordless jump rope or use an imaginary jump rope with your hands.

I like the Rainmaker, sold by Michael Olajide Jr. It does hurt when it hits you though.

Any of the light weight ones or fabric seem to tangle when I use them, which is very annoying but they don't hurt when they hit me!

ETA: I do have an airope, which is similar to what pcdoctor01 posted. I do get a good workout with it but I definitely don't engage as many muscles when I use it. (Especially in my core area)

I recently started jump roping with a real rope and like the one from the Tapout XT2 set. It is a rubber one with nice handles and a 3" or so little metal coil so it keeps its shape when you're jumping. I like that aspect but the coil does hurt if it hits your feet (I work out barefoot).

A couple of years ago I bought a cheap one from Walmart (made out of rope) and felt it wasn't heavy enough to get into a good rhythm while jumping.
