Exercising after abdominal surgery

Hey, y'all.

In one of the biggest surprises of my life, I was diagnosed on November 15 with colon cancer. I had no family history and no risk factors. I am grateful that the tumor was caught on a routine colonoscopy, my very first at age 50. I undergo bowel resection surgery on Monday.

Exercising -- and blogging, knitting, and a new puppy -- are keeping me sane. But I am beginning to wonder about post-op exercising. Of course I will follow my doctor's advice. I welcome any advice from anyone here about how you returned to exercising, what you were able to do, when you felt like yourself again, etc.

Thank you all so much. And for heaven's sake, get that colonoscopy. If you're scared, I'm happy to answer any questions about it if it would put your mind at ease.

AF

Wow, what a shock to the system! I also wish you a full and speedy recovery AF!

I had an abdominal hysterectomy at 50. The only advice I’d give is follow doctor’s advice about resuming activity, especially regarding lifting weights and Ab work. Take it slow, pushing yourself risks setbacks & a longer recovery. It’s frustrating to have your activity severely restricted when you’re used to being active! I had to avoid the stairs for 3 weeks and no driving for six weeks. (((Hugs))) & take care!

I just had a resection in June and followed these suggestions pretty closely: https://4afsfit.com/exercising-after...ect-your-guts/

I'm sorry about your diagnosis but so glad you had the colonoscopy done so you can get treatment. My resection wasn't due to cancer but feel free to pm me with any questions or ask here. I strongly believe that being fit going into the surgery helped a lot with my recovery - my recovery was fairly easy.

Thinking of you. Good luck with your surgery!

I had intestinal surgery the end of august - emergency - they had to remove some small intestine due to a twist. I wish I'd seen the link Erica provided, it seems to be great. however, I'm 3 months past the surgery and hauled hay last weekend (not by myself) and my abs have been hurting since. My surgeon (I called) said it can take a year to fully recover (ah thanks for not telling me that 3 months ago), and I've had to back off of exercise until I feel better. So I guess my advice is take it slow. Good luck and hope you are back to feeling better very soon!

After hysterectomy I did slow, short walks after a week. Gradually added in upper body weights being careful not to strain my abs. I think I waited a month before doing focused ab work.
