I was a limited reader as a youngster, not like many here who were avid readers then & throughout life. I am interested in Forever Amber besides people commenting here about it, I love the 1940's & that book was written in 44'. What catches me even more so I must admit hearing it on OTR. (Old Time Radio- huge fan here). I have heard it mentioned on many shows Jack Benny & The Great Gildersleeve programs which makes me want to read it because it was such a known book then. And it being a romance is a big plus!

Some years ago I read the most hilarious review of Forever Amber, that I think dates back to some point fairly near its original publication.

It's badly written if what you're looking for is historically accurate dialogue ( I think the phrase 'Thanks a million' or something equally anachronistic pops up somewhere.), but I remember it as an entertaining story.

I have The Far Pavilions on my shelf. I read it about once a decade. It's about the only book I've ever re-read. Well, that and Pillars of the Earth.

For those who belong to a book club, what are you reading? What have you read in the past that most liked?it is my turn soon to come up with some selections for the group to choose from and I am drawing a blank. Not offering much info but if you could just suggest whatever I would be thankful.
Fiction only please. Non fiction gets offered but never chosen.

I'm going to suggest a book that I think would be good for book club discussions, though you must realize I have never been in a book club! I think this book may be little known, I'm not sure. I know the author -- I don't think this ever would have crossed my radar otherwise, but I did really enjoy the book. It's My Half of the Sky by Jana McBirney-Lin (http://www.amazon.com/My-Half-Sky-Ja...a+mcbirney+lin)

The last two books my group read were The Family and The Boys in the Boat, both historical non--fiction. Now, we're reading Call the Midwife, the original one in the series. The next two books are Girl on the Train and Orphan Train.

I just finished 'The Woman Who Stole My Life' by Marian Keyes. She is quickly climbing my favorite authors list!
