I have been reading too many dark books lately and need something lighter.

Right now I am reading, "An Untamed State" about a woman in Haiti who was kidnapped for ransom. It is very graphic and brutal. I'm not crazy about the writing, but the story does have me hooked. But the brutality is getting to me.

Just finished "Nordie's at Noon" which was written by four women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in their twenties and what they went through. Don't want to say too much about it, but this book broke my heart.

Also read "Ten Days in a Mad-House" which is an expose written in the late 1800s by a woman who pretended to be insane to be committed to a public mental institution. Very interesting and sad/scary.

Last time I checked in here, I was reading "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea." I finished that and found it very interesting. I knew nothing about North Korea before I read the book so I feel like I learned a lot. The next book I am going to read is "Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West" and I'm looking forward to learning more about the area. But I really need something lighter to read after that.

Hard to believe it's time for the fall reading thread already!

I haven't started a new book since I finished my vacation book last week, Breakfast with Buddha. Before vacation, I was reading the Fannie Flagg book Standing in the Rainbow. I do need to finish that one, but it's been kind of a slog b/c it's sort of all over the place--more of a collection of anecdotes than a true novel.

I just read Maeve Binchy's Week In Winter. I loved it. I'm waiting on Eat, Pray, Love and David Nicholls' One Day. Then I want to try something by Jojo Moyes. I discovered Marian Keyes this summer.

Right now I'm reading two non-fiction books: Boundaries in Marriage and Tired of Trying To Measure Up.

I'm reading A Vision in Velvet by Juliet Blackwell from her witchcraft mystery series (I like this series a lot better than her haunted house series for some reason.)

Next will be Ghost of a Gamble by Sue Ann Jaffarian from her Ghost of Granny Apples mystery series.

I forgot to keep track of series I enjoy and was lucky to spot these at the library.

I'm forcing my way through The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, and honestly? It's put me in a bad mood!

A few simple bits of knowledge need to be shared in order to solve a problem, but will anyone ever just spit out the words? Stop talking about other stuff in order to let the important stuff make its way into the conversation? Noooo.
Dithering, delirium, arguing, broken phones, miscommunication, blithe indifference. Argh.

On the other hand, the basic idea of the story is really compelling.
(At some point in the future, historians can travel back in time to observe the past. A young woman gets sent back into the 1300s, and well, chaos reigns, bureaucrats bluster, people don't listen, past and present.)

I'm forcing my way through the book because I do want to know how it turns out, but wow, this is not helping my mood.

Hi,

I just finished Baker Towers by Jennifer Haigh - I recommend if you like family stories that ring true - no happy endings, life is bittersweet. It takes place in a PA mining town (Bakerton) and follows the Novak family from WWII through the 60's. There is a "sequel" of sorts - News from Heaven - which is a collection of short stories about the Bakerton characters.
