Recommendations for watch with GPS

Please share recommendations for a fitness watch with GPS, for son age 19, runner.

Does watch have to be added to cell phone plan for service for GPS to work? He has wifi at school that he can connect to if that's an option.

Thanks!

Hi,
I have this Garmin Forerunner 45 on my Xmas list, lol. I probably won't pair it with my Tracfone (still old school here and don't use my cell phone very much). What I liked about this GPS watch was that the battery life is 14 hours (GPS mode) and 7 days in Fitness Tracker mode. It also comes in a "smaller" version so it will fit my wrist better. They usually pick up the GPS without being hooked up to internet or cell. Kind of like a Tom Tom or any other GPS device.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 15 now (discontinued) that is very basic but the battery life is only 6-7 hours so I have to charge it often and it's not really ideal for longer runs.

Hope that helps. There are lots of options out there! But I've had a few different versions of Garmin Forerunner and never had an issue with any of them.

I've been very happy with my Garmin Vivoactive. I don't wear it all the time for tracking since I have a Fitbit and the Garmin watch looks so big on my tiny wrist but the battery life for GPS is 13 hours, I think. I turn it off when I'm not using it and usually get like 4 runs out of it before charging.

This is the one I have. I think it's an older model. I don't know anything about the Vivoactive 3 but I feel like it would be hard to go wrong with a Garmin!

Various features matter so much for running watches. I knew I wanted to the interval function and wireless syncing (I use Running Ahead). I also wanted (but didn't need) to be able to use it with my bike also. So I ended up with the Garmin Forerunner 735 which I've had for a few years now and absolutely love.
