A chiropractor taught a one night class I took several years ago and said that running does not ruin knees and that the impact stimulates the synovial fluid in the joints. It made sense to me. I am a runner and don't have many knee issues, and what I do have was, I think, caused by hiking on slippery melting snow with unstable footing.
