Why Running (and Walking) Is Unlikely to Ruin Your Knees

I thought this was interesting, because I thought running did hurt the knees. I’m not a runner, but I know I need to walk more and am glad to find that both strengthen the knees.

Quote:
It seems paradoxical: Measure running’s impact on the body, and you see knees take a pounding, absorbing up to three times an individual’s body weight with each step. However, running is known to strengthen bones, and a 10-year study found running is not associated with a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis.

A chiropractor taught a one night class I took several years ago and said that running does not ruin knees and that the impact stimulates the synovial fluid in the joints. It made sense to me. I am a runner and don't have many knee issues, and what I do have was, I think, caused by hiking on slippery melting snow with unstable footing.

You don't have to be fast, just keep moving forward.

I got the dreaded 500 error before I could finish my answer last night! I don't run often, but when I do I am careful since the repetitive impact can hurt my arthritic knees. I don't believe that running or walking caused my arthritis, but too much of either activity does exacerbate it.

I've been running since I was 17 years old, that's 48 years!

My experience is that if you keep your lower body strong, strength train all those muscles, your knees won't suffer. Mine are still just fine after all these years of running. I read about so many runners who have painful knees and they all want a bandaid (supplement, knee brace, etc.) My advice is always, always strength training!

Running for 48 years, that's awesome! Good point about strength training.

I've been running for about ten years but doing lower-body strength training and yoga for a lot longer. No serious knee problems. But I never had plantar fasciitis until I started running.
