This thread was just what I needed to “hear” right now. No matter what, ladies (I assume) you got this!
Thank you!! I do feel utterly alone in how hard perimenopause has hit me. No one else in my real life understands this at all. They either just had some hot flashes or gained a lot of weight and aren't really doing anything about it. I was really active and had an advanced fitness level in my early 40s and maintained a decent weight for a decade with heavy weights and high impact. And then boom. At 45, huge weight gain, injuries galore. Nothing has worked until now. It is just the less is more mindset that I need to work on daily.

The loss of fitness level is what really bothers me. It doesn’t seem to want to come back either, no matter how hard I’ve been going at it.
Ugh.
Well, this will be interesting at least! LOL!

You're absolutely not alone. I have brain fog that started in my late 30s and the pandemic just made it worse. I get the occasional hot flash, but the biggest thing is weight gain and weird DOMS feelings in places that never used to be bothered by exercise. I'm re-reading the 5-0 ebook today and her discussion of what exactly estrogen even does regarding recovery from bodily stress and stuff makes total sense. I just feel like nobody talks about this stuff! Some of my friends will mildly "complain" about this stage of life, but yeah, they don't really do anything about it, and I'm determined not to go down without a fight!

I highly recommend seeking out a Menopause Specialist. Unfortunately, there are none on the tiny, undeveloped island that I live on, but if I could, I would. My family and I aren't in a situation where we can travel, and we don't know when we'll be able to. I'm almost 54, and am a few years post-menopausal. I've recently started estrogen patches and progesterone, thanks to my doctor here, but she's no menopause specialist. We're both doing the best we can, until I hopefully get to see one. The good thing about a specialist is that they'll work with you throughout. They'll help you choose options that are best suited for you. No one should have to suffer through all the symptoms, especially when we're all going to be post-menopausal for the rest of our lives. This article may be helpful.

She literally laughed at me when I told her that I think I've been in perimenopause for the last 4 years (and bear in mind that my mom was completely through menopause at 45 and I told her that!) even though I'm still cycling normally (at the time I was 46). She continued laughing and said, "Hah! Talk to me when you're 50!" And then she left the room! There I sat in the paper gown, alone and totally dismissed by this supposed "menopause specialist."

Thank you! I went back to my old gyn this year; he was my ob-gyn long ago. We're the same age and he was appalled at her behavior. He was more than encouraging and when I asked him about the weight gain, he said "You know, it's not impossible. It's just going to be challenging. But if you want anything badly enough, you'll find a way." He was also quite knowledgeable about perimenopause and agreed that I've been in it for as long as I've thought. His words: "You know your body better than any blood test." Quite a difference experience this year!

Lori, she sounds like the absolute worst. So sorry that you had to go through that. Some people should not be in that field. I can't even begin to imagine. When I was researching potential doctors, when we thought that we were going to travel, my husband helped me to read reviews about them first. One that I'd heard (from only one person, mind you) was going to be great had terrible reviews and said to have the worst bedside manner. Who needs that in the best of times, never mind when going through all the hormonal stuff? Nope.

I'm so happy to read this.

Lori, I think of you often, since I know that you've had a tough time with all this, as have I. I love what he has to say. Hopefully, God willing, you and I, and anyone else here who' struggling as well, will all be able to lose the excess weight. I agree with him. It's not impossible, but it can be done.

Thanks for this, it's been a very rough couple of years physically. I can't believe how very little of this I didn't know in my early 40s but I have had to learn "on the job". I had only ever heard of hot flashes; I didn't even know the term perimenopause until I had to put the pieces together myself.

It's also the complete unknowing of when or if I may ever feel better again -- it's been nearly 4 years now and my cycles are still regular but my symptoms are just at their worst. And I'm only 48, so knowing it could be more years of this crap is just depressing. Glad to know I'm not the only one though!
