Too bad many of the women I know have no interest in weight lifting.

Yes strength is very important which is why at age 56 I still lift. And Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in her 80's and lifts. In fact I was at the bookstore last week and her trainer has published a book outlining the program he developed for her. I didn't get a chance to look at it but there was a funny article in Politico about her routine several months ago.

Interesting timing. I have an appointment with a physical therapist today to find out how to lift safely after a mastectomy. I'm curious if there are any moves I should no longer do, how heavy I should go, etc. I used to be so strong and am now so weak, so I have to start somewhere to regain what I've lost. BTW, I'm 52.

MelissaA I would be interested in hearing what you learn. I had a left modified radical mastectomy & a right simple mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with expanders Dec. 2014. Finished chemo in April 2015, had "the boys" put in in June. My plastic surgeon said I could do anything. In the fall of 2015 I bought myself a Concept2 rower & have been happily rowing ever since. I'm back to lifting weights & helping dh with the garage construction. I'm 68.

Good article, thanks for sharing. At my gym it's just about 50/50 men and women in the weight room.

OMG Sue! Greer Childers in her Oxycise glory!

Also, it’s unfortunate that it’s such a surprise that women over 50 lift heavy weights - that an article is written to point it out. That being said, I have only one non-VF friend that lifts at all so guess it’s not surprising that’s it’s a big deal.
