Question Advice from VFers in their 60's, 70's and beyond?

What fitness advice would our "vintage" VFers like to give to the younger crowd? What do you wish someone had told you?

My advice would be:

1) Get up and down off the floor regularly. I'm 64 and have a few issues, but can get up and down from the floor easily (if not gracefully). So many older folks lose that ability in later years. I want to keep doing it.

2) Posture. Posture. Posture. Work on posture as best you can every day. You will look and feel younger!

3) Balance work. If you don't fall down in the first place, there's less chance of breaking anything. You can do small things every day to improve balance.

What advice would other "vintage" VFers have?

I'm in my early 50s but number 1 is so important. For the first year or so after my knee replacement surgery, I really, really struggled with getting up off the floor since I can't kneel comfortably. Now that I'm exercising regularly again and regaining flexibility in my hips, I've improved tremendously.

I would add just movement in general. My parents have become SO sedentary (not being critical...they have legitimate health issues!) that almost anything winds them now.

thanks Alta for the reminders - i've been striving for all of what you mentioned in the past 5 years, and i am <60.

tip #1: i figured out how to get rid of neck pain - so simple - stack your head over your spine (and keep reminding yourself).

it instantly goes away (duh)!

with our habit of looking at our phones, it's so easy to assume your posture is fine. the rest of your body could have great alignment, but if your head is drooped forward, you will get neck pain.

tip #2: learn about your breathing and observe it throughout the day.

That’s great advice Alta!

The only other thing I’d add is STRETCH. A little flexibility goes a long way. It can prevent back pain, improve functional fitness & improve your golf swing.

Great advice so far. I would add strength training. Remember the ancient Firm VHS intro with a cross section of a leg IIRC showing fat and muscle. Unused muscle will atrophy. I went to knee-hab PT after a torn meniscus. I saw lots of older women whose thighs were like sticks, trying to learn how to get up off a chair, never mind the floor.

Prior to Covid, I regularly attended a rec class. The earlier class had several women in their 70s and 80s. All of them hauled out the big blue exercise mats and put them away. They get off the floor easily. No help, no hand up, nothing.

Truly role models since most have been regularly exercising 35+ years.

I would add to this fantastic list, climbing a minimum of 10 flights of stairs daily.

Yes good point! I have a friend who lost a lot of weight after having bariatric surgery. She didn’t follow the program recommendation to do some strength training. She is my age & her arms & legs are like little sticks now.

As you get older just keep moving, being consistent in being active and leading a healthy lifestyle. I think we stop worrying about what we are doing or what “works” best and we do what we enjoy and makes us feel good.

So much of the physical is mental and vice versa. Do whatever you can to stay healthy all around.

True, you’ll do what you enjoy. I like the idea of finding the place where what “works“ overlaps with what I enjoy and what feels good. In retirement I think it’s good to have some sort of consistent regime & routine.

Excellent thread! And much excellent advice.

I would add don’t overthink it. Do something, anything, most days. Develop the movement habit and keep at it. If it means less strenuous workouts at times, so be it. Just do something and keep that habit going.

Don’t neglect your mental health. There are workout activities that help with mental and physical health. Don't neglect those.

ETA: Oops, i just realized I restated what Izzy and Yogapam wrote, but they said it better.
