total body strength training for beginner/intermediate

Hi,

I have tried to get into lifting weights a few times, but I always revert back to doing only cardio. My current routine consists of Leslie, kickboxing, and yoga. I occasionally do classical stretch or ellen as well. I get some strengthening benefit from the yoga but would like more.

What I'm looking for is a 30-60 minute total body strength training routine that I can do once or twice per week. I'm looking for something with relatively good instruction. I have lifted weights before with a trainer, but it's been awhile so I'm certainly no expert. I'd love to find a few DVDs I can rotate. I have both bands and weights at home so either is fine. TIA for any suggestions!

10 Minute Solution Target Toning is good. It is very basic. Also, Petra Kolber's Step by Step Strength Training. I think the instruction is better with Petra's.

Here's a few I think are good, basic workouts with good instruction.

For basic, motivating instruction, I'd vote for Gilad. Split Routine gives you 2 workouts - 1 cardio and 1 weights, each 45 minutes. Then, if you like his style, the QuickFit set is great value.

I would second Your Best Body by KCM. If you want to use heavy weights, KCMs 30 Minutes to Fitness Weights is good as well. One of my favorite band strength workouts is Cathe's TravelFit. It's one of her easier strength workouts (so I would rank it as intermediate), but I find it challenges me.

Good luck with your search. I hope you find something you really like.

I highly, highly recommend Erin O'Brien's Strong Body, Ageless Body.
It is, as the description states, "back-to-basics fundamentals" taught by a "down-to-earth, straightforward instructor" using a focused, personal trainer style. She even uses just one pair of weights throughout - she recommends from 3 to 8 lbs - to keep it simpler (less intimidating?) for newbies.

Erin is very encouraging, offers multiple options and the exercises are doable for those with limitations: reverse lunges instead of forward ones, no pushups or burpees, etc. Yet it's challenging and results-oriented. The whole video is a little over 40 minutes but it can be shortened to standing only. Its only flaw is a miscount on the side-lying section during the floorwork (2nd half). It's a wonderful section but she does more reps on the first side. How I fix it is by repeating that bit when I do my second side. It's a little annoying but the video is so good I overlook it.

This video is one of my Desert Island picks for sure and will always be.

This one is only 20 minutes, but I love it! My favorite part is at the end where you do pushups and Amy tells you "Don't get scared"!

I do this workout whenever I don't feel like doing anything- it hits everything.

I have to agree that Erin O'Brien's Strong Body Ageless Body is a great choice.
I also am a big fan of Les Mills Pump.
