VCRs to end production this month

Pour one out for the VCR, which many of us started with. (I'm sure they will still be plentiful at thrift stores and Craigslist.)

Me too!

Since we were forced to 'upgrade' to some sort of digital cable box we can only record on one channel at a time, so the VCR isn't as useful as it used to be, but it suits my lifestyle perfectly.

A backup is never a bad idea at the right price I say.

I honestly thought they stopped VCR manufacturing about 5 years ago. I will need to really get one now as I have some priceless old home videos that need to be converted into a digital format.

I still have a lot of VHS exercise workouts. I should buy a backup VCR too.

David Frum linked to this VCR story and tweeted "My shrewd bet never learning how to operate one has at last paid off." Like Jusca, I'd just assumed they'd long since stopped manufacturing them.

The article says to head to Radio Shack. Radio Shack online does not have any VCR, videocassette player or any other term I thought of.

I did as well. I have three DVD/VCR combo players, one of which is a recorder but I am not sure the recorder part works anymore. I only have 10 or so VHS workouts anymore anyway, all of which have been burned to DVD. But I worry about the DVDs deteriorating, one of my players none of the burned copies will play in anymore but they will play in my other ones and my laptop.

I do have a couple dozen VHS movies, those I really want I will just replace with DVD. I also have a lot of tapes where I taped old stuff off the TV, lots of old Dancing with the Stars episodes, 1996 Olympics, stuff like that. I suppose a lot of that can be found on You Tube though.
