Hi Lori,
I’m sorry you are going through this! Last year I posted my experience with a PE/DVT. I understand how you are feeling. It is really scary and wondering/worrying if it will happen again. Mine was in Dec 2017 and here I am very healthy. Still trying to lose weight which will help minimize my risk factor but happy that my lungs seem to be completely normal again. I had to do the shots and started with warfarin. I ended up allergic to that and now on Eliquis. I had a test marginal for an autoimmune condition that might make me more prone to clotting. They won’t retest as long as I’m on blood thinners so I don’t know. Hopefully you can get some answers. Good luck! Marie

Like Marie, my husband is fine and hasn’t had a recurrence since going on a blood thinner. His PE was about ten years ago. When he had the PE, he was hospitalized for two days and they put in an IVC filter.
Jus be alert to any weird symptoms. My husband didn’t have the usual signs of a PE but the was having trouble concentrating at work. Thank god he called his doctor who told him to get to the ER soonest. There are alternatives to warfarin. My husband is on xarelto but the copay is high, even with good insurance. He doesn’t have any food restrictions or have to go in for monthly blood tests so it’s worth it to him. |

Thanks everybody! Makes me feel better to hear everyone's stories and well wishes. I just need to get over the fear that the meds aren't working (probably just anxiety). I have started slowly walking on my treadmill for about 20 mins twice a day, just to give my mind a break.
Thanks again for everyone's thoughts, I appreciate them so much! |

Lori, I’m so happy you caught it and you’re on the mend! It is very scary!
I had Pulmonary embolisms that traveled to my lungs in October 2011. I was in the hospital for 5 days and have been on Warfarin ever since it happened (8.5 yrs.). Mine were unprovoked and because there wasn’t a reason for them happening (I had multiple cat scans and they tested me for all the blood disorders), I will have to be on Warfarin for life. I have an appt. in May with another Pulmonary doctor to see if I’m a candidate to take something else that doesn’t need monitoring. The main foods to limit are kale, spinach, cranberries, dark leafy greens, and broccoli. I eat them in moderation but don’t avoid them. My doctor told me to eat my normal salad for lunch and vegetables for dinner and we would adjust my dosage around it. But the key is consistency though, if you don’t eat those your INR will be higher. I’ve been lucky that my dosage has been the same for the entire time. All that to say if you do have to take Warfarin indefinitely, it’s just an inconvenience but very easy to live life normally. . Take care and keep us posted on your recovery.
