The carbon footprint of dvd production and the reality that dvds & their plastic cases don’t degrade if they end up in a landfill are valid considerations. I think if you look at using your existing DVD collection and/or buying used dvds, that is recycling & is certainly “green” especially in comparison to buying new dvds. IMO streaming & downloads are also “greener” than buying new dvds and certainly make it easier for instructors to produce new material. I love streaming & downloads because I travel a lot and they make it easy for me to take my workouts with me. As far as power usage, I agree with Nuggie’s Auntie that streaming on an iPad probably uses a lot less power than a tv & DVD player.

The energy used to stream locally is not just what your device uses, but the energy used in the data centers that host the content. Of course one person’s streaming is not much, but millions of streamers can use a significant amount of energy.

I convert all of my DVDs and watch them on a small tablet because I find that more convenient; it is, however, likely to be more energy efficient than spinning a disk in a laptop (we don’t have a standalone player). If variety and flexibility are major considerations, then streaming can e a good choice.

You mail your CDs to them & they send them to a special recycling place.
Thank you Dorothy! This is a great option.
