An older series, but new to me, is the Maggie Hope mystery series by Susan Elia MacNeal. The first two books (and possibly more) are set in World War II Britain, and the author does a great job of portraying the toughness of the British people. I'm not sure I could have endured the things those folks endured in the early 1940s.
