I often use a basket to hold my yarn when I crochet or loom knit. What about finding a nice basket and filling it with a few skeins of yarn, some needles, the gift card and one of the books mentioned? Someone at Joann's could probably help you pick out a few things for a beginner knitter. Personally I would love receiving a gift like this! And since she is already getting into this it shows that you are paying attention and supportive of her interests, which can really strengthen a personal connection, in my opinion, and helps some with depression. I think it's really sweet of you to go to the effort for such a thoughtful gift.

A bag is a great gift! I recently bought several of these bags from Michaels for Christmas. $6, plus 20% off! https://www.michaels.com/artist's-lo...hoCHHAQAvD_BwE

I bought them for my daughters (who are into art), as well as several of their artsy friends.

Thanks for the bag/basket idea! My niece goes to my mom's lot so it would be nice to have a travel bag for her yarn etc. I've seen some bags with holes in the top for the yarn. Are these helpful/worth it or would basically a large open tote with a flat bottom be all she would need?? You have all been SO helpful!

I also highly recommend the Vogue Knitting book. That is a resource that she'll use for years.

  • Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
  • Knitlandia: A Knitter Sees the World by Clara Parkes
I agree with the Stitch 'N Bitch books and was also going to recommend Knitting in Plain English but more for basic instructions not for patterns. I don't find the Elizabeth zimmerman books helpful.
