Thanks, Wendy!

I need to lodge a gentle protest against putting Patricia Walden's's "Yoga for Beginners" in the Beginners section. It is WAY to discouraging for a real beginner! Don't get me started!

I'd like to add two more to the "Beginners" list. (And you know how particular I am about the exact meaning of "beginner" ):

Yoga for Inflexible People - BodyWisdom Media

Yoga for Extreme Beginners - Evamarie Pilipuf

Wendy - thanks for doing this. I know it isn't easy. Just by way of being, hopefully helpful, I'd make the following changes. I tried to base them on what's popular in the yoga check in, etc., rather than my personal preferences.

  • Most of Lilias Folan's tapes
  • Yoga for Dummies
  • Wai Lana Yoga
  • David Swenson's Just Relax
  • Kathy Smith’s New Yoga Basics
  • Quick Fix Yoga
  • Yogilates I
I would add:
Erich Schiffman's Backyard Series - Beginners
Lindsey Clennell's Yoga Basics

  • Richard Freeman's Yoga Breath & Relaxation
  • Total Yoga Earth
  • Lilias Alive with Yoga: Vol. 2, Stretch and Strengthen
I would add:
Ana Forrest Strength and Spirit and I think I would remove Yoga for Relaxation - that's really something in a different category
I would move Yoga Mind & Body to intermediate

can't take the credit

You will notice that this thread was posted over 2 years ago, and was compiled by the Yoga checkin folks, not me, so I can't take credit. I'm not surprised that changes are in order.

Yoga fans, do you agree w/ the suggested changes and additions posted here?

I agree. A lot of videos (and audios) have been released since this list was originally compiled.

I'm a yoga fan, and I agree with myself. Especially about that Patricia Walden video. She almost ruined my life! In case you missed my earlier thread:

I haven't seen all the suggested videos. But, I would like to add Paul Grilley's Anatomy for Yoga DVD as a terrific source of information about individual anatomy differences affecting one's practice. It is not a workout, but is in a lecture format.

I don't think I really trust this site as a source of yoga information. They list hatha yoga as a separate category from Bikram, Ashtanga, power and Kundalini. All physical yoga (as in, the sort one would do with a video) IS hatha yoga. Some schools that teach power or Ashtanga will refer to their non-power classes as "hatha" classes, but that seems to be a change in use of the term (and I think we should discourage it).

The New To Yoga section at Yogajournal.com is quite good. That might be a good link for a newcomer.

We should probably put Candlelight Yoga somewhere, in the absolute beginner category, probably. I'd add the other Eoin's, too, just because so many people who don't think of themselves as yoginis are encouraged to have a yoga practice through his work. Intermediates, I guess.

I wonder if we could agree on what goes into a "don't bother" category. Probably not. But on my own personal "don't bother" list goes Yoga On The Ball. As sweet as Sarah Ivanhoe is....

And the idea of a list of links is a good one. I agree with Kimberly that the yoga-videos site is under-whelming, but how would a beginner to yoga judge that?

I would agree with all Jane's additions, she covered everything that's currently popular on the yoga checkin. I'd go one step further and bump everything else down to Intermediate though, the only exceptions being Ana Forrest's 5-day CD set and all versions of Primary Series by anyone.

The problem is, that would force "intermediate" to span such a wide range that it would become even more meaningless than it already is, if that's even possible...

More additions...

Beginners:

* The Beginners Guide to Yoga CD - Shiva Rea
* A Morning Cup of Yoga CD (comes with book) - Jane Trechsel
* Easy Yoga DVD - Leeanne Carey

Intermediate:

* Yoga with Ateeka DVD - Ateeka
* Divine Yoga Flow CD - Ateeka

Advanced (IMHO):

* P90X: Yoga X - Tony Horton

I'm trying to cover things that don't get mentioned in the Yoga Check-In, but are still worthwhile.
