Of course I don't mind- actually this is a good chance for me to do a bit of a PSA. I seriously hurt my back doing headstands- or rather trying to do them. But note that some of my injury stems from the fact that I have weak lower back muscles and a health condition that makes my joints sensitive,so my doctor and a specialist in the condition *strongly* prohibit me from yoga.
I learned the hard way that just bc your instructor has been doing yoga for 30 years, doesn't mean she knows how to instruct- even if she's studied with famous yogis whose names you recognize (B.K.S. Iyengar). My instructor was a very kind woman and dear friend, but that didn't mean she could properly instruct me. She had trouble putting descriptions of poses into words, and I am not a very visual person so that was a part of it. The worst bit was that I let her use a magnet therapy back massager on me to help with the pain. The massager basically looks like a dumbbell and it felt like it had bruised my lower back! I think that was at least 50% of the injury right there. |

Shoe Lover, what a horrific experience! Yikes, the magnet therapy back massager-resembling-a-dumbbell does not sound therapeutic! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and I really do hope you're doing better. I also hope that you will one day come to enjoy practicing Yoga again.

Yes, it was quite painful, but I'm much better now thanks for asking.
I had made the mistake of staying with this instructor bc she and I were friendly, when it was clear that my practice wasn't advancing and I wasn't challenged enough. I first started feeling that way when she was slated to move to Europe in a few months, so I figured it wouldn't do much harm to stick with her a bit. Well, then her children got engaged and she had two weddings to plan so they stayed in the states another year and soon after that announcement I had the injury. I would have intense pain in the region between my shoulder blades and neck when trying to go up into a headstand, but my instructor assured me it wasn't dangerous. A lot of the problem stems from my joint condition- which I think is important to share with you all bc it is very common. I have something called hypermobility disorder, recently discovered by a colleague of my internist. (If anyone wants more info PM and I can give you his name- he's all over the web on chronic fatigue syndrome). Essentially people with this have uber flexible joints, although I fall into a small subset who have very stiff oints. There isn't much info out there on this but I do know it affects as many as 10% of young females who are slender and tall. I'm not particularly tall (5'5") but I do fit the other symptoms: key ones are lightheadedness, low blood pressure, limbs fall asleep easily and migraines. I actually did not have migraines when my doc first told me about this condition, and that with the height bit made me think this diagnosis didn't fit but about a year later I began experiencing migraines though fortunately not that severe. |

I like the Jill Miller Yoga for Weight Loss kit (the Gaiam kit) for beginners, and people transitioning from fitness to yoga.

There are so many videos that have been produced since that list.
Just off the top of my head: Level assessment is very subjective. I think it's not a great idea to jump your level, but a truly advanced practitioner should be experienced enough to get a good practice from any of the vids listed below. Experienced Beginners: Barbara Benagh Yoga for Beginners , Yoga for Stress Relief , AM/PM Yoga for Beginners Jill Miller Yoga for Weight Loss Erich Schiffmann Backyard Series: Beginners Intermediate: Erich Schiffmann Backyard Series: Backbends Jill Miller Yoga Links: Core Intensive,Yoga Links: Hip Helpers, Yoga Links: Shoulder Shape Up Ana Forrest Pleasure of Strength Advanced: Erich Schiffmann Backyard Series: Lotus,Backyard Series: Inversions Ana Forrest Five Day Intensive (CD set)
