My mom has struggled with sever SI joint dysfunction over the years. I'm a physical therapist and have worked with her a bunch to at least strengthen her core, improve her flexibility, and decrease inflammation in the area. She seems to go through cycles where she's good for 5 years and then everything flares up. This (flareup) happened around november of last year. Over the course of 4-5 months nothing helped (therapy, anti-inflammatory, etc) She finally went in for the cortisone shot where they placed her under light sedation put it right in the SI joint. After about 2 weeks she was noticeably better and now she's doing great. She had this procedure done previously (5-6 years earlier) with success as well. Now she is back working out in the gym 3 days per week and we are playing golf again. She still has to be careful with certain movements but she doesn't have the pain anymore. I've been reading a lot about prolotherapy which sounds very interesting. I know a few orthopedic doctors here in FLA that swear by this procedure. Here is some info: http://www.theosteocenter.com/prolotherapy-injections/ I wish you luck. Please don't give up. Its a long process to heal but you can heal.

Thanks for the replies and well wishes. I'll keep looking for help around the area but things are limited in the small towns nearby.
kariev34 - I didn't know about the sedation. I thought they'd shoot it with lidacaine before the cortisone like they do for the epidural spinal injections. The sedation adds to my list of no-way. I don't really want to treat the symptoms when I can treat the cause with exercise. I'm sure you know what I mean but if it gets much worse I'll consider the injection. I'll be looking into prolotherapy-injections, too. Thanks. Barb - I usually run from putting anything under my lumbar and butt but I'll see what I can do. A tennis ball in that area will never happen. There's too much wrong back there for that much pressure. rosepetals - I've been living with this for almost 8 years now. Ice is my best friend. I'm icing now since being at the chiropractor. I'll do anything in my power to not get an injection because it won't fix the problem. I hope you get lots of relief from your pain. We have to do what we have to do. As far as I'm concerned, exercise can fix anything. We just have to find what works for us. |
