Have you every tried Gary Kraftsow's Viniyoga DVD for lower back? It is intensely boring, but extremely effective.

The Restorative Exercise Specialist I saw is also quite a distance from where I live, but the drive was well worth it (I can't drive for long periods because of back and hip pain, but on balance the temporary pain of sitting in a car was worth what I got out of the session). I thought that I was doing the exercises correctly, but she showed me some adjustments that made a huge difference in my freedom of movement and stability. I hope that it works out for you!

I have it but i never needed a shot. i just went to my chiropractor ( i miss him so much!) Shots and stuff never came up. I was just told to really, really stretch. and talking to an instrctor who also has a slight case of it, told me that the best thing is to relax. (because i have noticed when i am stressed - i do have more flare ups.) (though that's easier said than done sometimes)

(hugs). i hope you get better soon.

Relaxation is key when doing either the Egoscue or SacroWedgy.
Also patience in letting gravity do its thing.

When I first tried the SacroWedgy, I couldn't move afterwards till circulation returned to the area. It was more painful initially after lying on it than before. Since then I haven't had that problem probably because I have learned where to place it and to relax. I think applying Arnica gel before the Sacrowedgy helps too. My favorite position is with the heels touching while the knees are bent and spread open but I have to ease into this position.

Starbelly - yes, I have and actually enjoy Gary Kraftsow's DVD. His calm demeanor works for me. I think dh will be open to the idea of driving to this place because he won't have to go near D.C. I always sit in the back seat because it's more comfortable than being up front. People stare but that's their problem. Getting into and out of a car is torture.

daisysunshine - it's so good to see you!! Sounds like your doing much better than you were. I'm happy for you! I keep my chiropractor in business. I'm sure stretching is a good thing but it pulls me out of alignment. I need someone to tell me what needs strengthened and what needs stretched. I'm good as long as I avoid twisting but we can't go through life without twisting. My back aches as soon as I get stressed so I try to avoid it. Hard to do with a dh and a dog with joints as bad as mine if not worse.

I'd rather eat glass than get in that position! I can lay on my back for a bit but longer than a minute or two and I can't move. I'll have to experiment to see how much I can take. I complained about my back hurting while still under the effects of the morphine after the knee surgery. No one would listen because it was all about the knee. I got onto my side as much as I could while having the knee in the cpm machine but 4 days of that hospital bed was just plain evilness. Is that a word?

Barb - I ordered the pink SW from the website. I had the blue one before but they say that's for men. Which one are you using?

I also ordered YFSR one more time. LOL

I have had mixed results with sacrowedgy. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it inflames things.

Pretty much the best thing has been the PT who does unusual exercises. But it was I that had to do the work. No one can do it for me. I think his technique was different from most PTs as he suffered from a low back injury himself.

Chiropractor helps, but over time too many treatments can increase the symptoms. So I found I have to space them out. Not all treatments with the Chiro are as effective. Sometimes it makes things worst.

As far as I can tell, my injury from the surgery is permanent and won't ever go away even with treatments. I just try to bear with it the best I can. Sometimes Ice helps. You have to experiment and listen to your body for the best help. I know if I was not having luck with shots, I would not allow myself to be pressured into taking more of them. Especially with the amount of potential side effects.

I sure hope things work out well for you. Have you tried restorative yoga. Sometimes relaxing into a supported pose can help a bit. For me being gentle and patient with my body is the best thing I can do for it. Nurturing it with gentle movements that allow time for it to adjust and stretch.

I use the pink one.
At first if uncomfortable, you can even try it without the black support base.

Before the SacroWedgy, I got some relief using a tennis ball. Maybe that may help you find your sweet spot too.

My mom has struggled with sever SI joint dysfunction over the years. I'm a physical therapist and have worked with her a bunch to at least strengthen her core, improve her flexibility, and decrease inflammation in the area. She seems to go through cycles where she's good for 5 years and then everything flares up. This (flareup) happened around november of last year. Over the course of 4-5 months nothing helped (therapy, anti-inflammatory, etc) She finally went in for the cortisone shot where they placed her under light sedation put it right in the SI joint. After about 2 weeks she was noticeably better and now she's doing great. She had this procedure done previously (5-6 years earlier) with success as well. Now she is back working out in the gym 3 days per week and we are playing golf again. She still has to be careful with certain movements but she doesn't have the pain anymore. I've been reading a lot about prolotherapy which sounds very interesting. I know a few orthopedic doctors here in FLA that swear by this procedure. Here is some info: http://www.theosteocenter.com/prolotherapy-injections/ I wish you luck. Please don't give up. Its a long process to heal but you can heal.

Thanks for the replies and well wishes. I'll keep looking for help around the area but things are limited in the small towns nearby.

kariev34 - I didn't know about the sedation. I thought they'd shoot it with lidacaine before the cortisone like they do for the epidural spinal injections. The sedation adds to my list of no-way. I don't really want to treat the symptoms when I can treat the cause with exercise. I'm sure you know what I mean but if it gets much worse I'll consider the injection. I'll be looking into prolotherapy-injections, too. Thanks.

Barb - I usually run from putting anything under my lumbar and butt but I'll see what I can do. A tennis ball in that area will never happen. There's too much wrong back there for that much pressure.

rosepetals - I've been living with this for almost 8 years now. Ice is my best friend. I'm icing now since being at the chiropractor. I'll do anything in my power to not get an injection because it won't fix the problem. I hope you get lots of relief from your pain. We have to do what we have to do. As far as I'm concerned, exercise can fix anything. We just have to find what works for us.
