Why you are wrong about the BL outcome

I found this article that says it all for me. I have been appalled at how many people have been beating this poor woman up. Who are we to judge her? I feel bad for all the work she has done to be belittled across our country. Here is the article. I hope some of you take it to heart and realize she is a human being with feelings.

I edited it and it works now. It just took me a few minutes.

Cheryl, thank you for the link to this article! It's exactly what I was trying to say in the other thread.

It just breaks my heart the way people are treating her.

I haven't judged her. Nor do I think she looks unhealthy per se (although I don't know her current habits or how healthy they are). But losing 155 pounds to get from 260 to 105 in 5 months? That's insane!

The article you posted would make more sense if TBL was a healthy show using healthy protocols, instead of the all-day exercising, laxative use and dehydration techniques that the contestants seem to fall to. Sure, losing weight is important but the show is a circus that uses huge cash prizes to entice people to do the near-impossible.

I have nothing against the contestants; maybe Rachel will be fine and maybe not. It's the show I have problems with.

I'm not judging her. I just dislike the BL. It's an unhealthy way to lose weight and breeds trouble, IMO.

This article by Ellen Barrett is wonderful.

Exactly. Here is another blog article saying this same thing by James Fell at SixPackAbs.com: http://www.sixpackabs.com/boycott-the-biggest-loser/ Both he and Caitlin at Fit and Feminist, as well as a slew of other smart people, are saying:
Quote:
I’m not going to comment on how much weight the winner lost. I am not a doctor and can’t assess an eating disorder via an image on a website. I will not engage in any form of body shaming either, be it fat, thin or even “huge” shaming.

But I can sure as hell go on another rant about why this show is so damn terrible.
Quote:
People will do almost anything to lose weight. They’ll also do almost anything for $250,000. Combining these desires is a recipe for a disaster. The fact that no one has died yet is a testament to the physicians behind the show.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not praising these physicians. I think they’re morally bankrupt too. They’re assessing just the right amount of torture that a contestant can take. It’s taking what should be a slow and steady process of lifestyle change and pushing it to an absolute extreme of human tolerance. It’s the climbing Everest without oxygen of weight loss. It’s the wing suit base-jumping of weight loss. It’s the Acapulco cliff diving of weight loss.

I believe most people were upset about the fact that biggest loser encourages and rewards such extreme weightless and not judging her as a person

I disagree with the article. I would never ridicule her or anyone who is over or underweight. But I don't think that's the point here. To me the point is - where as a society do we draw the line? Where do we say that enough is enough and let's start encouraging our young girls to be healthy, not skinny? This poor girl is very underweight - and was encouraged to get that way in an unhealthy manner by a television show for profit. THAT is wrong. And saying that it's okay to do this is not a message I want for my 21 year old daughter.
