OT: How should you feel after a tooth extraction?

I had to have one of my teeth pulled yesterday because it had cracked and there was an infection around the root. It was unexpected. One minute I was at the dentist with a sore tooth, and I went right from there to the oral surgeon. I just had novacaine and no general anesthetic. They said I would be "fine" in a few days and that I could start exercising again on Friday, but it's hard to believe I'll ever feel well enough to exercise again! I'm just dragging around. I'm taking antibiotics and antiflammatories. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I've had my fair share of infected teeth- 4 wisdom and 1 premolar. Give it 3 days. The antibiotics will have kicked in (unless the antibiotics are making you feel bad), and any pain should be gone or at least substantially decreased. If not, I'd make another appointment to see the dentist to see if the antibiotics are making you feel blah.

Sometimes even going for a walk outside will make you feel better too even though you may initially not feel like it. Hope you feel better soon!

I am so sorry this happened to you! I totally understand because I broke a tooth in half at the beginning of January while eating a peppercorn. I went through the roof it hurt so badly.

The tooth had to be extracted and an implant put in. I did have general anesthetic (I guess for the implant) and took antibiotics and ibuprofen. I worked out the next day but did an upper body workout - nothing too heavy. I also avoided inverted positions. I don't think I did anything with impact until the end of the week.

I'm sure you're doing this, but I found that rinsing with warm salt water helped with the healing.

I know you feel miserable right now, but you will feel better. Hang in there and take care of yourself.

Dental infections can be extremely draining. After my extraction I only needed pain killers for a couple of days, but was fatigued for a week or so. Rest and let your body heal. The more you rest the sooner you'll feel better.

Best wishes to you.

I work at an oral surgeons office...your 3rd day will be your peak day for any pain or swelling. You usually only get swelling with lower wisdom teeth, but older people can get swelling and bruising. You didn't say if it was an upper or lower tooth. I would alternate 600 mg of motrin with tylenol if the motrin is not taking care of the pain for 6 hours. Ice helps with pain. I consider your 3rd day to be Thursday, anything after that things should start to gradually get better. On the 4th and 5th day if it gets worse as opposed to better you may have a dry socket. With a dry socket usually pain medication doesn't help, it's a shooting throbbing pain that can go to your ear or radiate to the front teeth. If you feel like you have a dry socket on Friday call your oral surgeon and they can put a dressing into the extraction site to help with pain. OR you can buy some clove essential oil and use a glass eye dropper and put a couple drops into the extraction site to help with the pain.

Hope you feel better soon.
