Tubal ligation

I am a mother of one 20 month old son, 33 years old, married.

I am happy with my small family and would be interested in getting a tubal ligation, for various reasons I am not happy with both hormonal and non hormonal contraception, such as IUD.

My husband disagrees strongly but just because he is an only child, not because it would be a good idea practically/financially to have another baby (we live away from family, so no support system whatsoever - I'm a stay at home mom).

Any lady who has had this procedure and would care to inform me about it? Recovery, scars/pain, downtime, able to lift weights afterwards (I need to lift my toddler multiple times a day), and especially abdominal and pelvic floor integrity after a TL?

It's not as popular in Europe so it's hard for me to find sterilised women to speak to.

Thank you in advance friends!

I had a tubal ligation in 2005 and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. My youngest child was 2 1/2 at the time. I don't remember much about the recovery time, but I think I was back to normal very quickly. I had more pain than I expected right after surgery, but I was fine by afternoon (had the surgery in the morning). Went for a walk with a friend the next day and tired easier than I expected, but I think everything was fine after that.

Wish I could be more help - it was almost ten years ago an I can't remember much! It is very nice to not have to worry about pregnancy and, like you, I wasn't happy with other kinds of birth control.

Good luck!

I had mine 31 years ago when I was 30, so I don't remember a lot about it. I think I had a scar in my navel and one slightly above my public area, but I just looked and I don't really see them anymore. I don't remember it having a big effect on my workouts. I'm sure I wasn't supposed to work out for a short time. I do remember than I barely had any pain.

I have zero idea what the situation is like in Europe, but I've spoken with women in North America who have had a heck of a time convincing doctor's to even consider giving them a tubal ligation - particularly if they haven't had any children. So if you're serious it's worth finding out if you can even find a doctor willing to respect your choice before doing too much research on the actual procedure. It would be annoying to decide and then not be able to follow through with your decision.

My doctor questioned my having one because I was single and had no kids. What if I met a guy who wanted kids? I told him then I guess that guy wouldn't be the one for me. My body, my choice. I've never regretted it.

I had a tubal after my second child, I was 29. It was a very straightforward procedure with a quick recovery. My husband was away a lot with his job and I didn't want a third child. I had lots of free advice from friends and family saying I would regret it, but I have never looked back. It is a permenant decision though so you need to be sure. Good luck with what ever you decide!

I had mine after two boys, my doctor just wasn't all that keen on my wish for a 3rd. I gained too much weight and has 2 C-sections. I never regretted it. I had no issues with my tubal ligation and preggo scares. I wish you the best in what ever you decide. It is not easy.

I have an appointment with my GP on the 22nd to discuss this. I am prepared for battle, especially because each time I take my toddler to the GP surgery I'm asked whether I'm thinking about another one. Let's just say that Northern Ireland is extremely conservative when it comes to birth control policies. If you ask for a tubal you're supposed to undergo counselling, and I did find a leaflet online with some questions for you to ponder. Two come to mind: "Are you sure you won't be feeling less feminine afterwards?" and "Have you considered the possibility of losing a child?" (shudder...)
